Default polishing compound not as advertised: now what?

Here's the story: There was a large spot on my rear passenger side door where the paint was missing (likely due to some a$$hat hitting me with their door). I applied some touch up paint, and thought I'd try to smooth the edges and blend a bit, so I picked up some polishing compound that stated it was for removal of fine scratches and was relatively safe for clear coat. Well, it wasn't. The area I polished with this stuff now looks like there is no clear coat at all, and is severely scratched/swirled. It is obviously duller than the surrounding paint and generally looks like a turd.

Is there anything I can do at this point to at least try to make this less noticeable? A good wax maybe to bring back some shine? I'm really upset about the damage I inflicted on my own car, so any advice is greatly appreciated. THANKS.
