it is perfectly safe to do... i wouldn't go under the car like that, but it's safe... when i change the tires i'll typically throw one of the extra wheels and tires under the side of the car after i lift it up... if the car falls, it's gonna fall on a wheel and not on the ground... that is a good option if you can't be bothered with jack stands like me...

jacking up on the diff or front xmember is more stable than it looks! plus you can change 2 tires at a time saving time and effort...
