First off, I never said there was a problem with the height of a 235/40/17 tire for a 06-07 WRX. The difference is exactly .22" which, btw, is more than 1/8th inch. Not that it's a problem, I'm just correcting your math which you seem to have forwarded to imply that I don't know something.

245/45/17 is 45 sidwall. It can handle up to a 30% stretch in spec. 245 on a 7.0" rim is 37.8% stretch, as we said before. It's a lot CLOSER to spec on an 45 sidewall but STILL out of spec.

Sorry if you don't like the word "stretch" being used to imply a wider tire than rim but it's fairly obvious what I mean and I cannot think of a more appropriate term.
