How does sitting in the driveway with the engine running, help warm up the AWD gear oil? Seems like that would be an arguement in support of the "drive gently for warmup" theory for the shortest distance to a "warmed up" AWD car, and therefore much improved mpg.

In automatics the transmission "cooler" is conversely a transmission "warmer" when it is cold out. Of course, it will still warm up faster if you drive it.
