Default Oil filter with a strong can

Just got my car back up and running after 8+ weeks for a tranny fix. Installed an oil cooler/adapter sandwich for future mods(I autox).

After priming the motor for 30 seconds, I went out and checked under the car. Oil was dripping from inbetween the filter/adapter. I THEN remembered I had only hand tightened it when I put fresh oil in couple days before. I used an oil filter strap to snug it up.

Unfortunately I may have damaged the seal when I crushed the oil filter can a little while tightening it as oil was still leaking when I restarted the car.

Now, my problem could be 2 things.
1. I did damage the seal when I tightened it. Which case I'm asking anyone if they know of a brand that does not crush when tightened by a strap.

2. The oil-bypass hole in my sandwich adapter is to small, thus causing oil to be squirted out thru the oil filter seal. I'm not inclined to believe that it is the adapter as the oil should flow to the cooler, preventing any kind of flow restriction. Sandwich adapter is an HAYDEN Automotive #243.
