Well, if you get a spare motor, just slowly hack away at it. Get the heads ported, add some agressive cams from cobb (as an example), and new valve springs and possible retainers (also from cobb as an example, thats where mine are from). Pick up a Unichip for a good price, raise the redline to 7,000-7,500 (and tune the sucker) and you have a fun little motor. But make sure the cams you get make power that high, otherwise you car will weeze out after the stock redline.

But it depends how much you are willing to do to the spare motor. You can lighten, balance and knife edge the crankshaft. This means less rorational mass, and more freed (<-- is that even a word??) up power.

BTW, this all is an option to do to your present motor while in the shop, but the crank wil rpobably cost because you have to open the block which isnt nesessary now.

But here is an idea. Just port the heads you have now at the shop, thats it. Then do as many of the reccomendations to the spare motor as you want (except the cams, valves and retainers, leave those on the table for later). When you are ready for the spare motor to be put in your car, swap the ported heads form your present motor to your spare motor, but only after you install the cams, valves and retainers into the ported heads. Then there you go. I hope this idea makes sense to you, it does save you money for now, and in the future.
