The reason Subaru doesn't have a button like Toyota is becuase its 4EAT computer is smart enough that if you quickly slam the accelerator down the floor, it will down shift to 3rd gear for more power. Overdrive is in almost all the auto tranny. The last gear is called over drive because it locks torque converter to save gas at high speed. As for the other shift positions, they are for different driving conditions. 3 means it will never shift into 4th gear. It is good in slippray road for better engine braking force. 2 is used to lauch the car in snow or ice for maximum traction. 1 for climb step slops. In normal driving, always put in D position.
