Aside from the "yo, I g0ts a SSD NAW I MeaN!!", I don't see the need to spend extra cash on it.
back y0 chit up and you should be fine.

Also, being that you are a student, "Feels cheap" doesn't mean "is cheap" and sometimes paying for what "feels" good isn't the best financial decision. My fiancee's hundai felt cheap compared to my RS-T, but she is driving her car to work everyday and I"m not
My gateway feels like a child made it with playdough, but I"ve had it for 2 years and it is fantastic.

In regards to your question, I think the i7s do use a lot of power. If this is a computer for class, I'd go with an i5 or less considering you aren't doing anything but typing/pretending to learn.

ACtually, if this was me,. I'd buy a netbook to use for class (~$300) and a bad ass desktop ($1200) for more important things and use the remainder of the money for accessories (bluetooth pointer/slide advancer (for talks), extra battery for netbook, etc).
. I currently have a netbook, 17"laptop and a desktop and I use all 3 every day. However, if I didn't need my full sized laptop for lab work (graphics intense), I'd get rid of it. My EEE PC and my desktop are good enough. That and 6 hours battery life (with actual usage) = t3h winnARZ.
I mean, I-winnARZ!
