It's not always that simple! Work in the business awhile and you'll understand. I have expansive parts knowledge, and I need VIN numbers to correctly identify part numbers ever single day. The fact you've gotten parts right the way you have is good, I can do this 80-90% of the time, too. It's easier to just get the VIN upfront before wasting time getting to a diagram, and then finding out you need it and have to wait for the customer to come back.
When the mid-year production changes that some of us have been mentioning finally rear the ugly heads when you've got your car apart... you'll wish you had just given them the VIN. These changes are often more drastic then you assume.
