BMW is preparing to recall 504,545 vehicles in the United States – along with another 65,000 in Canada – to address an electrical issue that could lead to engine stalling.

Models being called back include the 2008-2011 1-Series (coupe and convertible), the 2007-2011 3-Series (sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon) and the 2009-2011 Z4 roadster.

In the affected vehicles, the connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time, potentially leading to a break in the electrical connection between the front-mounted fuse box and the trunk-mounted battery. Should this happen, a loss of vehicle power can occur, causing the engine to stall and increasing the risk of a crash.

One minor collision stemming from the issue has been reported, but BMW says the incident did not result in any injuries.

BMW will begin notifying owners of the recall in March, at which time dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector free of charge..

The recall is BMW’s second within a year to address a battery cable-related electrical issue. Last March, the automaker recalled 1.3 million vehicles worldwide (including 367,000 in the U.S.) to fix improperly installed battery cable covers that could cause electrical problems or even vehicle fires.
