Question Question for all you tech guys/gals out there (kinda long, sorry)

Figured I would ask all the locals before going too far with this.

Lately my MY00 Impreza 2.5 RS has been making a strange noise from the rear of the vehicle. It is making a whining/whiring/rumbling sound at speeds above 30 MPH. The sound reminds me of an improperly set up rearend on a rear wheel drive car. The sound is independent of whether or not the car is in gear and also independent of if the car is running or not. The sound also could be described as the sound a 4X4 makes driving on the highway with off-road tires on it but not at that high of a volume.

The question is, has anyone heard of this type of problem and if not which dealership does everyone recommend taking the car to for warranty work. I am sure the responses will be for Exeter but I live a little far from there and wonder if they have loaner cars available.

A couple things I thought about being the source of the noise. Let me know if they sound reasonable or if I am a blithering idiot.
1)Bad wheel bearing
2)Bad tire
3)Bad diffferential

Thank you in advance for any suggestions/feedback

Joel
