Did you thoroughly clean the throttle body by taking it off the intake manifold?

Also did you clean the IACV---Idle air control valve? You can take it off the throttle body housing but it requires another gasket. ($10 subaru) Its impossible to reuse it as it expands when the iacv is taken off. this will help relieve some of your rough idling.

Now onto the cam position sensor (located right under the oil fill on the front drivers side of the motor. use a 10mm wrench to unbolt it, and see if there are metal shavings on it. clean off the shavings and dirt on it until nice and shiny. The cam position sensor is a magnet that reads cam position (duh)

the crank position sensor is located under the alternator and is a bit hard to get to but its worth a cleaning to get the metal shavings and dirt off it as well if your going this route. After cleaning mine, the car idled perfectly and stopped stalling. make sure these two sensors are plugged back in before starting the car.

I have seen these go out on subarus (my 02 wrx included) it makes for a really rough idle and sometimes a flat out stall when accelerating. Yes they throw a CEL when they go bad but not always. Stalling will occur.

OP when was the last time your plugs were checked for proper gap?

Also FYI i've owned my car since June 2006, been a member of nasioc under various names since October 2006....so I am not a Suby Noobie....mmmm k?
