When you boost a 4 banger on AWD, you are looking at about 19-21 mpg in pure city, stop and go from light to light.
I'm at work so I can't dig through the interwebs for answers, but I would challenge the opposite: which four banger awd cars are getting worse gas mileage than the WRX? Mini Countryman, even a bigger A4 or A3 I would expect to trump the WRX. And that's not surprising, the EJ engine is outdated.

The real flaw for the current WRX is it gets poor highway milage and as a result crappy combined for most people. I see 22mpg with a mostly highway commute in my MY11 and I'm not standing on the pedal.
