Default Hyundai HND-9 Coupe Concept

Hyundai HND-9 Coupe Concept

Quote:
While not as big a show as the New York Counterpart, the Seoul Motor Show is still a place for great inspiration and finds. This is why the folks from Hyundai have revealed the HND-9 Coupe Concept. That, and maybe because this is their home country. Anyway, the concept is out and it is stunning.

Some time ago, the company only released a few pictures and minimal information about the model, but now we have the full specs. Also, it is confirmed that the concept previews the “next-generation luxury sports coupe.”

Naturally, we still don’t know what coupe exactly is the next-generation one, but we can probably guess it is the Genesis Coupe. We can’t go wrong with that guess. Regardless, it is expected that the styling present on this model will influence the looks on many Hyundai models that will hit the markets in the next years.

One of the main indicators that the HND-9 may in fact be a preview of the next Genesis Coupe refers to the concept’s powertrain: the HND-9 is fitted with a turbocharged, direct-injected 3.3 liter V6 engine that delivers 362 horsepower. Previously, it was stated by Hyundai executives that the next version of the Genesis, due to arrive in 2016, might have a turbocharged V6 engine installed.

Mated to the turbocharged V6 is a new 8-speed automatic, which is already being offered on the carmaker’s Equus flagship sedan and arrives with paddle shifters. Power is sent only to the rear wheels.

The HND-9 is the 9th concept model created by Hyundai’s design center in Namyang, S. Korea. The vehicle, with the long hood and wheelbase, has an overall length of 15.4 feet, a width of 6.2 feet and a height of 4.4 feet. The wheelbase stands at 9.4 feet.

With the combination of traditional rear-drive coupe proportions and a modern look, the lines of the HND-9 concept underline the high performance image of the car. Many details as well as premium materials, work to consolidate the upmarket look the company is quickly adopting.
The main details include fluid surfaces, voluminous proportions plus a large, hexagonal radiator grille. Furthermore, butterfly doors, sculptural rear combination lamps, and dual tailpipes placed on both sides, offer the car a sleek and attractive look. The wheels feature 22-inch light alloys that contain carbon elements in the effort to reduce weight.

The interior styling of the concept car was intended to deliver a modern and luxurious feel. The seats are fabricated from a special mesh material that project different colors, depending on the angle of view. The driver-oriented, high-tech interface takes reference from a jet fighter cockpit, which also goes well with the greenhouse’s design.

After the unveiling of the HND-9, we can say for sure that Hyundai is no longer shy about its intentions to expand into the luxury segment. Speaking of which, also at the Seoul show this week Hyundai unveiled a new “Equus by Hermes” concept car; this hints to a new special edition being considered.
Obviously it will look nothing like that, but I'm liking the sound of a 3.3L turbocharged/direct injection V6 at 362bhp. Even though the current n/a V6 already makes 348bhp, a 3.3T w/DI would make for some interesting modding.
