I agree, unless he plans on racing it later or he is very in to "tuning his suspension", coil-overs are over kill for a DD. Good springs will get him lower and improve handling as well as upgrading the struts. Make sure you get good/larger swaybars (both - $400 frt & rear) and a lower brace to tighten up the handling ($200).
If he's running a stock turbo, a stock or if you must, an upgraded TMIC would be fine. No need to spend $$$ or get complicated with FMIC.
Headers need to get a pro-tune and really don't add that much hp (10-15hp at the topend) unless you do motor or turbo changes. Stick with a good TBE exhaust system and a pro-tune will due wonders for performance without compromising daily driveability.
I prefer Defi gauges - Oil pressure, boost, and EGT. Titan is ok for wideband but several others to choose from.
