Stock gear are not crappy.

Stock gears are plenty strong. It is normally a bad driver. I am pushing 80K on my 2003. 50+ hours of track time, dozens of AutoX/RallyX, lots of off roading, Test and tune 1/4 mile track days of 30+ runs each, and general abuse. I have been through 4 clutches, but the tranny is just fine.

The RA gears are great for ratios and they also keep the Subaru under 150, which is nice.

PPG is very nice but costs a bit. If you are going that route, you should get custom ratios to fit your driving/racing needs. If you have to ask what ratios you should run, keep your stock gears and use the money for NASA/SCCA track time.
