There is no sensor in the fender. There is an accelerometer under the center console that measures acceleration vectors (direction and magnitude) and determines whether or not the airbags should go off.

Modern systems do not have switches or sensors or whatever placed around the car. Just the occupancy sensors and acceleration sensor in the cabin.
