That's probably just the picture - they've still got a LOT of meat on them. That's just some kind of tread on the rounded portion of the sidewall leading to the tread. I don't have a car powerful enough to roast tires that quickly.

I'm under the impression that tire shaving is a bit of a lost art usually performed at speed shops. I'm not entirely sure where I could get that done. But just to reiterate, I should be okay driving home on a
brand new (and thus, slightly bigger in circumference) tire of the same size, at highway speeds, for around 120mi? I've got no idea how delicate the AWD system is, so I'm being a bit paranoid about it.
