Another point to consider... from experience. I live in the land of 5 to 6 months of winter... also known as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where road salting is common practice.

Getting too much undercoating can also be a problem. As the undercoating ages it dries out and can chip or crack. It may or may not come off, but it sure does a great job of trapping moisture behind it thus causing rust to develop when you cannot see it. A few of my previous vehicles rusted due to this problem. I am currently of the opinion that the factory has provided a decent amount of undercoating. If I keep it clean as often as possible it is not going to rust out. So far this theory seems to be working best for me. My 98 Outback is in great shape and I am hoping that my 03 Baja will last well too.
