In all seriousness, though, airbag experts - is sitting too closely dangerous? Is this something we should try to get her to correct? I imagine it would be hard for her to do after years of driving that way... but if there's a solid argument about why she should, then we may just have to force her to change her ways.

There is a minimum distance on how close you should sit to the air bag. It varies with every car. Check around and then get her in the car and get some measurements. It's usually steering wheel to chest. There may not be enough space between her and when the bag deploys. It could break ribs or give her a heart attack.
