It's much easier to build a car that light with AWD, big motor and lots of luxury when you sell it for $74k to start (2009 A8 base price). It's not so easy when you need to do it at a $29k starting point (2010 Taurus SEL AWD base price).
Lightweight materials aren't cheap, and the engineering to implement them and still pass crash tests isn't either. When you can use a heavier and less complicated piece to accomplish the same goal it's going to be a lot cheaper. That's the route Ford, VW, GM, Subaru, Toyota, and pretty much all of the "people's car" manufacturers take. Even Audi does it in their A3 and A4 cars which are frequently referred to as overweight "pigs."
