I think Exhaust is a good starting point. Many people claim that getting exhaust will increase the HP by X% and that is true in some aspect. But there are combinations you might want to consider. Installing an intake will allow your car to breathe better, and along with the exhaust, it will allow your car to expell the nasties better.

Many people also say that bigger the pipe is better. Well yes and no. A bigger pipe will not give you the torque you need on the get-go. I will guarantee that a pizza delivery car can beat you on this. 3" pipe cat-back would be good when you're at higher speeds. After the muffler, size of the pipe tip will not matter. Mostly cosmetic. I've seen a 240SX with a 7" pipe. It looked REALLY STUPID! But everybody has their own little thing...Shooting golfballs, or bowling balls, it's up to you.
