Default passing smog

I have an 02 wrx with a straight exaust. MY CEL is constanly on. I went to autozone to clear the light so I can get a smog check. Does anybody know for how long does the light stay off after clearing codes?

before you get flamed. cel's may come on at any time. there is no time limit. your basicly rolling the dice before the next one if you get them all the time.

yet he does not list the reason for the cel's coming on or the code it has. yet that might explain it. That generally points to catless or something.

What state are you located in? Do you have OBDII inspection? If you do, clearing the code will NOT allow you to pass because doing so resets the readiness monitors so they will show a "not complete" status at the time of inspection. Once the monitors have set the CEL will probably be back on since the true problem has not been corrected.
You need to know the exact code that has been set. If it is P0420 for catalyst inefficiency you'll need to install a mechanical fix.
Also depending on the inspection procedure and how thorough the inspector is, you may still fail a visual inspection.
