yeah. i know what you mean. Sunday i was finally staying in my seat when i was going! the first few times i'd be sloshing around in my seat, trying with all my might to hit the pedals right. i definantly need a good seatbelt. and tires, and suspension and a chip, and exhaust and new turbo, and and and and and. heh.

thanks to Jason (AKOBS)

so post up some pics someone.

As I was saying in the other thread when it got closed... (chris... heh) that Jason your doing pretty good to. I can't seem to catch up to you because as my times are getting better, so are yours. And I watch you run when I can but I have to remember what works in your AWD car might not work for me in my FWD car.

okay what i noticed....

phil...nice and smooth through everything...but i think u could have picked up a few more tenths being by taking the chicago box faster...

jay...u were losing time on the way back after the turn around on the turn just before coming...carrying too much speed and u were plowing around that corner so u lost time when sliding and not sure if that also messed up line for going back through the slolam...

Yeah, I butchered it bad twice there. Got it smoother a couple of times, only to mess it up near the box.

thanks to Noel Dike, she coached me a lot that last course. told me what to aim for and where to enter in. my line in/out of the box both ways was much better, probably where i beat Phil's times (according to her). my last run, i did (as best i could) exactly what she told me, aim for this cone, aim for that one, late apex here, hold the steering wheel there, etc.... with moving the seat back down to a "normal" position (for me), it seemed to really make a difference! i just wish i'd tried that a little earlier, but now i know for next time... too bad it'll be another month before the next event. doubt we'll make it to the PCA event this month.

except that when we drove each other's cars, you drove almost identical times in both yours and mine on the same course..... so that may not always hold true.

except that i didn't drive the same in yours as i did in mine. i think sitting up higher in your vibe and how i was sitting that second run last weekend throws me off.... not used to actually SEEING out of my windshield or even the road!

maybe you shouldn't get your "gansta lean" on when you're autoX'ing.

Phil, hopefully you guys have a comfy sofa to sleep on.

Maybe I should try raising my seat more too. Typically, I put it in the lowest position to keep my helmet from smacking everything.

July 8-9 Solo event
cute.... hun, cute. you're such the man when you are not in reach of my wrath as i've PROMISED the mods to not forum slap anymore!

no, his ego is much more fragile so i cannot say much since i beat him this last event. though i get to hear how he beats me all the time, blah blah. *roll eyes* you know, because his car is "slower" and the course was "slick" and that he said i would probably beat his time because it was a "fast course" (despite the fact that he's still got the better tires or more power to weight ratio, especially on the low end) which has NEVER prevented him from beating me in the previous 4-5 events even in the RAIN, except this ONE time, usually by .2 - 2 seconds! so as i improve (ya hard to believe i may improve and it NOT be because my car happens to have more power) and get more competitive times, then one should expect that with improvement and the fact the car is more powerful, i might actually start beating OTHER people! my god! *gasp* imagine that!

the goal is to get a little better at each event, learn more about how my car handles for me and what i can or can't do in the car. it's not Superman, even though sometimes i think it is. Understeer has always been a huge issue for me. i want to romp the gas and slam on the brakes WHILE TURNING! no no no! so, i am trying to pay more attention to when i apply the gas and let off the gas as well as when and how much to brake and let off the brake. so far, yelling at myself in the car seems to work the best! and i just remember Linda Duncan reaching over and grabbing the wheel from me and yelling at me to stop over steering the car! LOL or slapping my hands when i didn't steer correctly.... really, she wasn't lying when she said she would!

I know I was plowing on the turn heading back to the slolam and messing up my line returning through. Also once I got the hang of braking, shifting and then turning... I was getting faster. And Chris your right, I was slow through the box... I couldn't get the line I wanted on the way back through.

I was trying a few things, my car is much smoother in second through the slolam but that often means if I don't downshift, I come out of certain corners slower. Its something I've been trying to work on.

yeah, i was having a hard time with shifting at Bartlett. Mark W. suggested for me to stay in first, so i did and i lost 2 seconds when i did it. :0

I'm happy that Phil's closing in on me, he's all smiles when he nails a good run. We chat strategy, it's all good.

I welcome people's comments on my technique, or lack of it. I think this is a good place to discuss setups too. I'm curious about everyone's setups, and how their car feels to them as a result. I'd like to hear what worked on course, and what didn't. I need to buy Kevin a few beers and pick his brain.

Sometimes it's tough to figure out the Hope/Phil dynamic. You 2 are a trip.

There's been a lot of new excitement in auto-x this year, which is awesome. New people, new cars. I was impressed with the Crossfire.

I beat my times in your car and always knew that once you knew what you were doing you'd beat my times as well... duh! lol but what ever. I'm a fragile little man who can't take it when others beat him despite the fact he comes in third at every event.

we can discuss this later offline....

and no, that was not a forum slap. trust me....

you still beat me in PAX and i think Jason too. i thought you came in 2nd the last one? why do you think i picked SML?? so i only had one other person to compete in my class and since Jill's been gone the last 2 events, I came in first! woot!

as for shifting, i found that if i stayed in first thru the box and shifted up right after the first cone in the slalom, it smoothed me out and kept my speeds up decently until right before i made the big U-Turn, where i popped it back to 1st so i didn't bog down going into that nice horseshoe curve. i stayed in 2nd all the way until right before the box when i'd pop it back into 1st.

the first run i left the car in sport mode, no shifting just so i could figure out the lines. jake was riding with me so gave me some pointers on my line and also on the shifting. i tried a few different shifting points here and there, but the above worked the best overall while allowing me to still steer and concentrate on what i was doing. only hit one cone the entire event, and that was the first run of the second heat with Noel in the car and readjusting my seat.

that's usually what I do, and did the first few runs.. but, it wasn't working out for me. I was over shifting. i was able to keep it in first since, at my fastest speed i'd be at where i'd need to shift redlining, but, i'd have to slow down as soon as i shifted.. so i kept it in first and i was driving smoother too because i wasn't shifting to and fro. i was able to drive a lot better because of my concentration being on driving and not shifting. so... yeah. it really depends on the course too. unless i'm way up there in second, i shouldn't be shifting that much. my boost doesn't kick in for awhile so often when i'm in second i'm going slow 'cuase i got no power.... aye-aye-aye. just more stuff to figure out in the long run heh. but, i'm learning, step-by-step.

Thats it, next time I see your gf there Alex I'm refering her to this site

or better yet, convince her to autocross and we'll watch as she smokes your times in that stock RS of yours

Watching the video from the school showed me were I could have been faster... like shifting into first before a turn so I could have made a faster exit... nothing like second gear bog to add time to the clock.

I know that instruction helps me... but I can't take ppl for rides... I do horrible with someone on board. Well if they are an instructor I do lol. Guess they make me nervious. I need someone to watch me and then tell me how I should have done something.
