Default '06 STi or Legacy Spec B or Wait for redesigned '08 STi

A friend has decided to get a Subaru vs the EVO... but his dilemma now is choosing between an '06 STi or a Legacy Spec B or Wait for the redesigned '08 STi.

Here are the factors to consider:

1. He has a 10th month old child.
2. He's planning on AutoXing.

I'm trying to sway him to getting the STi, but the Spec B's are nice too. He has another car, so the kid won't be riding in the STi regularly.

What do you guys suggest??

Thanks in advance.

If Barry is reading this... I'll call you in the near future once my friend decides.

If the main goal is to auto-X, go with the STi. If the main goal is for it to be daily driven with auto-X on the side, go with the LGT.

He's also made up his mind on color... if he decides on an '06 STi, it's gonna be white.

The Legacy will be hard pressed to compete nationally with the STI in the STU class. It's down on power and it doesn't have the same differential setup (nor would it be an allowed modification).

But if competing nationally isn't the goal then the Legacy is a fine car and a better daily driver.

Oh by the way I was almost certain the Legacy GT was the car for me. It's funny how a test drive can change your mind. As it turns out, all '06 and '07 models don't have an option for the moonroof delete. So that takes out nearly an inch of headroom which I desperately need when wearing a helmet. Because of that, I was forced to look at other options and ultimately decided on the STI.

If you look at the autox results, especially in the STU class
there are Legacy's on the tail of STI's or beating STI's
STI Swap

that is why you search for an 05 base model LGT, which is what i went after
5MT, Cloth, no sunroof, no spoiler

but regardless of what's being said, he's making the right choice of picking a subie over an evo

Edit: wtf? my banana is frozen!

i won't pretend that i race, so my opinion is unfounded there. however, i lean towards the legacy, myself. for a family car, legacy has more room and comfort. both are safe. lgt is easy to modify to get the power you need. ask robson or da rookie and others.

quarter miling is not recommended in any subaru, unless it's a rwd conversion(ESX just nailed a 7.9)...that's my disclaimer. it's done by many, though.

depends on your friend's abilities, but we tend to see more 'abuse' issues from quarter miling than autoX.

I can believe that. With drag racing you'll be so tempted to do a "hard" launch to get the best times. Too bad it'll destroy the drivetrain if you keep it up.

he's more concerned about autox... i told him if he can find an '05 sti used, he should jump all over it. If not, go for the '06 STi.
