RA gears are amazing. James@RPM has them. PM him with any questions he'd most likely be happy to help.

The biggest benefit of the RA gears is the ratios...don't think that you won't be able to break them.

If you want stronger gears get a PPG set.

Check out the Transmission forum.

From what I gather, the short ratios are nice for acceleration, but they are not the 'end all of strength' like everyone made them out to be. If you like your current gear ratios, but just want something relativaly inexpensive and strong, get an 04+ WRX tranny. I think those are good for around 275 whp +/- depending how you drive it.

As crawdads said though, PPG are the beef.

Stock gear are not crappy.

Stock gears are plenty strong. It is normally a bad driver. I am pushing 80K on my 2003. 50+ hours of track time, dozens of AutoX/RallyX, lots of off roading, Test and tune 1/4 mile track days of 30+ runs each, and general abuse. I have been through 4 clutches, but the tranny is just fine.

The RA gears are great for ratios and they also keep the Subaru under 150, which is nice.

PPG is very nice but costs a bit. If you are going that route, you should get custom ratios to fit your driving/racing needs. If you have to ask what ratios you should run, keep your stock gears and use the money for NASA/SCCA track time.

well from what i understand 02- early 03's second gear will pop rather easy, but the latter 03's are better in that department so you may have a latter 03, but i suppose you would know

i love my ra gear ratios. the gears are a bit thicker than earlier oem ones(same thickness/strength as 06 trannies). the shorter ratio does wind out on the freeway though.
