Hi there, I have a 2.5 for sale out of my wifes Outback. It has about 90k on it, and was running real good until the head gasket went. Luckily I saw the gauge start rising when we were two blocks from home. I knew this was a problem on these cars so I knew what to look for. I opened the coolant overflow bottle and saw bubbles and it smelled a little bit like exhaust. The next day I swapped it out with the extra motor I had from my 97 LGT (just swapped in an EJ20G). I was going to fix the head gasket and have a spare motor, but I want to get some room in the shop, and funds for more upgrades on my car
I'm just throwing this out there to see if anyone is interested, and wants to make me an offer. I'm located in the central part of Washington State. 98946Thanks |

I don't know. I haven't even really thought about it. I'm not looking to make a killing on it, and I don't even know what they go for. shoot me an offer. it is in good condition though. It was running great, and I caught the leak before it even over-heated. I've heard of guys driving for a long time with it getting hot while they keep trying to troubleshoot the problem. I would like to see it go to someone who needs it, or to someone trying some crazy stroker 2.2 turbo motor or something.

A phase II in good working condition with 90K Miles on it might sell for around $600. I would think that something in the $300 - $400 range might be a shade on the low side for your Phase I motor, seeing how its in good condition and only needs new gaskets.

I paid $600 for a '98 RS engine with just over 100k miles on it and 9k miles on a new set of head gaskets and timing belt (and every other related gasket, obviously). I would maybe pay $300 for one that needs to be torn down.
Just as a data point.... Pat |

I wonder if it would be worth it to just fix the gaskets, so it would be able to be sold as a ready to go motor? Or maybe it wouldn't be worth the time or cost in gaskets to get a little bit more for the motor. I really don't know

Autozone lists head gaskets for that motor at $39.99, dunno how much an OEM subaru one would cost. guess i could've just searched for that one too!
but anyway, if $40 and a few hours of your time brings the sale price from $300 to $500, i'd say that's definitely worth it (i can't afford that though. ) |

i'm pretty sure i paid about $40 for both the gaskets from subaru.. but while you're inthere you will need to replace some other stuff too. i think my total cost in gaskets and parts was $150. err, $163 but I bought a new water pump. your cost will vary. you should prob replace teh timing belt also.
