Exclamation Attn: 06-07 Wrx Drivers

After reading multiple, multiple horror stories about the 06-07 wrx transmissions...i was wondering who has had any problems/no problems of any kind with theyre 06-07 wrx tranny....and what have you PERSONALLY done to fix it...not your friend...not your brother or your cousin, you, this thread is for the 06-07 WRX drivers and theyre own stories...

personally...i have grinded 3rd two or three times since i have had the car...the car that i bought in july of 06 has 23k miles with no tranny fluid change, so im running the stock fluid...

please post whether you have mods or not, and if you have problems or not

really looking for other stories of anyone in here, and the truth is a MUST...

Thanks

Stock TD04 running 18lbs with accomidating mods. No problems at all with the trans yet, no grinding or anything. I really only get on it occasionally and only in third gear when i decide to really pull onto the highway.

the 1/2 gears on the 06/07 seem to be stronger... the 3rd gear is the new culprit...

blew 3rd with 7500 miles on the clock. I like doing 2nd and 3rd gear pulls, the gears don't seem to like it as much as I do. Pulled the crap out, sent it to andrewtech, and installed the godsend....ppg 1-4's. I had about 300 whp 300ft/lb or torque when I ripped 3rd apart.

I have a 2006 wagon, it was stock until... somewhere around 28k when I went to a TurboXS Stealthback w/ Cobb AP V1 Stage 2 map, and later added a 3" wbr axleback. Car was fine for a few thousand miles...

Prior to going stage 2 I took the car to the track but didn't launch the hell out of it. The car has plenty of hard 1-2 shifts and launches on it, and no bad grinds.

A few thousand miles after going stage 2, 3rd gear blew up while I was cruising.

I spent a few weeks researching all the options, and decided on dropping the trans with the help of a friend, then sending it out to andrewtech for 1-4 PPG Helical Syncro gears and a 3.9 final drive swap.

I now have a few thousand miles on the PPG's and they're doing great. The sound is perfect and the new final drive + ratios are great.

Now i've got a dead clutch, and i'm waiting waiting and waiting for an exedy stg 1.

Seems like the WRX Transmission can go at anytime, We 2.5L make so much damn TQ the transmissions deff dont like it.
From driving hard to 3rd gear blowing out, to just crusing around and switching lanes in traffic and 3rd gear blows. Just seems like a ticking time bomb =(

Then again there are other people with plenty of launches and good driving on their WRX Transmissions with 270-320WHP and they have been holding ground so far.

Once I upgrade to better gears in my 07 WRX, It will be a big load off my cheast, I know that for shure!

I have an 07 wrx tr with about 7000 miles. I have a cobb ap, TBE catless. I money shifted at 1000 and later at 5000 miles the transmission seems fine. I was going to get some Gram light optimise, but not anymore i'm now saving for a tranny. I'm being very careful with 3rd.

I had a vf39 w/ cobb & ST for EM. Pushing 16.2psi and busted 3rd while getting on it starting in 2nd one night.

I'm ordering all the parts today incl. LegacyGT gears as an upgrade... for now. I want to go PPG sometime soon though.

I though the legacyGT gears were as strong as the 06-07 gears, with a different final drive ratio?

with all of this being said...how many have SUCCESSFULLY been stage 2 under normal/spirited driving....how many have tracked it...and whats the average cost one would spend on a whole rebuild?

As far as I'm concerned, the newer WRX boxes are the same as the older ones with a 3.7 final drive and a push-style clutch(older I mean the mid 03+ WRX's). The ratios and gear I thought were identical to older WRX's.

It's typical for all WRX's to be weak on shifting to 2nd or 3rd. Like Jhargis said, it's the strain you put on the gear if the ratios are farther.

Think of a 10-speed bike. If you're riding up a hill in 10th, not only is it harder on your legs, but it's harder on the gear teeth since they're abosrbing so much more torque to turn the wheels.

This is why people who own Forestors don't complain of broken gearboxes. Forestor XT's come with the same gearbox as a WRX but with a 4.44 final drive. The super short final drive keeps the strain on the gears to a minimum since the ratios are close and short.

Same with Outback XT's. These have the same gearboxes as Legacy GT's but with a 4.44 final drive. Hell, even the Legacy GT owners don't seem to have many issues with a 4.11 final drive.

The 06+ WRX gearbox is the 2nd worst 5mt Subaru made behind the old WRX boxes that had tiny gears. This time, it's the bigger engine+ AVCS combined with the 3.7 final drive. I believe the bumped up the final drive to get the MPG lower when they increased the displacement.

This is what Andrewtech Automotive has to say on the subject. I was thinking about doing the vf39 upgrade but not now. I would say they are pretty much the experts on subie transmissions.

Quote:
Rob,

Despite popular belief, the 06 transmissions are not weaker, the increased displacement just makes them more prone to breaking then earlier years. Torque breaks transmissions, not horsepower. That is exactly what makes the 06's so dramatically different then the earlier model cars in terms of transmission reliability. The transmission WILL break with a vf39, hit it in third gear, shift to hard into 3rd gear, bang 2nd gear, and it will more then likely break. I know it sucks buying a new car and not being able to do anything to it because of the weak ass transmission, but it is what it is. Now the question is how you go about solving the problem.
Unfortunately there is no solution for just 1-3 as the 3-4 gear is a cluster gear that is one piece so you have to do a 1-2 or a 1-4. The going rate for a 1-4 just for parts is $4050. The install and build will bring you to $4750 plus shipping, unless of course you drive the transmission down here and pick it up.
Think it over and let me know!

-Edwin

Is that news to you?

The final drive makes it worse, too, but the rest of that is old news. Sorry we had to break it to you.

I have an 07 WRX with 5,000 on the odometer and I put a Invidia Catless Turboback and a OTS from Cobb on an Accessport V2 and I just blew my 3rd and 4th. I have never beaten on the tranny or launched it, I was casually shifting from 2nd to 3rd and when I pressed the gas in 3rd my gear just snapped and I quickly shifted to 4th and that was out too, so I switched to 5th and pulled over and had to have it towed. But, now Im gonna upgrade gears to PPG's so this never happens again.

07 wrx tr, 6000 mi, 7 month, stock

Occasionally the shift into 2nd will clunck. In the winter, a couple of times while the transmission was cold, I had to double clutch 1st->2nd.
