TACOMA, Wash. -- Police said some people are using flashing emergency lights and sirens as a way to beat freeway traffic, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.State troopers said a 25-year-old man has been driving around in a car equipped with blue lights and various sirens. He was arrested on Interstate 5 in Tacoma during Thursday night’s rush hour.Investigators said the man told them his audio-visual add-ons were just for fun, but police said they believe the man was trying to imitate police. The man is facing up to a year in jail.Trooper Christian Wilson said that police are receiving more calls about drivers modifying their vehicles to look like law enforcement, and that while lights and sirens are legal to buy and install, they’re illegal to use on the roads.“You cannot have any blue lights on the front of the vehicle. Those are for police and emergency vehicles only,” said Wilson.KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Monique Ming Laven found that when using the words "police car lights and sirens" on the search engine Google, the results offered strobe lights, grill lights and other products to consumers who may want to imitate police.Trooper Wilson said the State Patrol was able to catch Thursday’s driver because other drivers called in the man’s license plate and location. Police ask that anyone who sees a suspicious vehicle trying to get through traffic with similar lights and sirens to contact authorities.
