Default Acceleration Shudder?

I have an '02 WRX, and it is my first turbo car. I rev through first, then when I shift to second something happens. When I stomp or when I ease in the gear, the power fluxuates rapidly. Is this okay?

If it feels like your car is surging and bogging really rapidly, it may be the hose to your waste gate is torn. Mine was and caused enough of an over boost to make the car pull timing. The car felt like it was osscilating between on throttle and off throttle really quickly.

Is it a big fluctuation in power? Have a boost gauge - if so is the boost jumping around? Or is it more of a slight fluctuation, not enough to snap your head -- some have theorized that it's caused by the tumble valve generator in the intake.

Question Did this get resolved?

(Late Post on old issue, sorry, but only thing I have found that sounds identical)
I am experiencing the same thing in my 2002 WRX. It is stock, 40k mi.
SJwrx, did you get this resolved?

Background:
The problem is not consistent or really that reproducable, but it typically occurs in 2nd gear at about 1750 to 2250 RPMs with small even gas pedal. Stock option boost guage does not seem to jump up and down at all and is usually at about -.7 to 0 and rising.

Car will lope or surge/hesitate for just about 3 to 5 bursts. This is very slight power gain/loss and is not noticable to passengers on all occassions.

(There is also a "flat spot" in the accellerator, so that at high boost with full or almost full throttle, the car has power, but then letting off the gas to about <50% pedal suddenly the car seems to get TONS of power and really goes)
Are these issues related?

theories I have heard on surging: Gary's Hesitation Fix
Torn Wastegate
Air Fuel mixture problem
Timing

Can you help troubleshoot on my own before I take it to the dealer?

How many miles do you have on it? Have you had any work done or recent major services/repairs? How long has it been doing this? More info may help get you some help here. There are some really knowledgeable folks on these boards, but they'll need something to go on.

I never got it fully resolved when I had my car stock. No that it has a turboback and uppipe, its one hell of a lot better.

Rich

My 02RS does it in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and sometimes 4th if I mash the pedal down after I put it in gear.
