Default Possible to over-tighten a hose clamp?

This may sound a bit stupid but I have to ask anyways. I noticed a little bit of coolant leaking from the upper radiator hose where it meets the engine block. So, I took a screw driver and tightened the hose clamp to the point where I wasnt able to turn the screw anymore. Nothing snapped, the hose didnt crack or anything but what I am wondering is over time could this possibly be bad for the hose?

The clamp "could" work it's way into the hose and fray/mangle it if it's realy over tight but usually it should be OK...

generally speaking, the hose clamp won't snap - usually the worm gear damages (bends) the band, or the worm gear can pull itself through the housing. If the clamp is too tight, it can "extrude" the hose through the holes in the band, but this is generally more of an issue with silicone hoses, and can be avoided altogether if you use a lined hose clamp.

Cut worm gear clamps can cut the hose as noted above
The worm gear clamps where the screw drive is pressed in (ie, not cut out) are a little better as they are smooth and won't cut tubes. Overtightening these can make the drive skip (loosen)
T-clamps are the best, overtightening these can cause the screw to break (I did it once) but mostly only on cheap clamps.

If you were using a screw driver, no worries. You can't really impart enough torque to deform the worm gear with a screw driver. Put a bit on the end of your 1/4" ratchet and its a different story. When it does become damaged, you will find that its *easier* to torque than it was before. If it got more difficult and then impossible to turn, you're most likely fine.
