I was browsing the general forum and came across this thread that talked about a limited edition WRX for Australian customers. Within the article a SOAustralia rep says: "Impreza WRX has already been refined for this year with the addition of revised gear ratios in the manual, the introduction of the automatic version and keypad immobiliser alarm systems on all WRX variants."
Check it out, do you think that this is what is coming our way? (the manual gear ratio quote that is, not that stupid sunroof option stuff) http://drive.fairfax.com.au/content-...XBP3NF7YC.html |

It will probably be mostly cosmetic, I find it hard to believe that they would change gear ratios for just a few cars that would not be cost effective.

I memory serves me right, they lengthened 1st gear a little... it was/is just way too short. This is a real change.

Why would they lengthen 1st?
Won't that increase turbo lag and make the car slower off-line? If anything the need to lower 2nd, but of course I know they won't so as not to reduce the 0-60/62 times. Lengthen 1st? That's just weird. |

Oh weee... MY04 we'll be in hogs heaven.
-A WRX with an updated gearbox, sunroof and new headlights. -A STI w/ a six speed tranny, sunroof, new headlights, and hopefully an interior with lots of alcantara upholstery throughout. I'm game---there better still be a silver STI left for me around Nov 03 ![]() |

The Australian MY02 WRX has revised gear ratios giving greater in-gear acceleration. So much so that the MY01 gave a 6.9sec 400mt however MY02 does 6.2 seconds.
It's actually much faster than the MY01 when going from 70kms to say 130kms by over 2 seconds. I read it in an Australian review. The photo in the link above is for the Evo5 Club Spec which has been a model offered here for some years now. Dodgey colour though. Club Spec Evo4 |

Nope... no problems there once the boost comes up to full. When you're pulling hard at the top of 1st and then you shift to 2nd, RPMS are at around 2800? 2900? Just under where boost comes in.
So by lenghtening 1st gear a tad, once you hit top of 1st, and shift to 2nd, 2nd will be at around 3100-3200 rpms... resulting in quicker spool and better turbo response. 1st gear acelleration will hardly be affected and 0-60 times should be better because now there's hardly any lag in the 1-2 shift. Bring it in and I'll just do an 'update-backdate' to the gears that change. I think 5th was revised to keep the same overall final drive ratios. --kC "Wow I just sounded smart." ![]() Quote:

Note that although 1st gear ratio is now a tad higher, the final diff has been dropped from 3.90 to 4.44 to compensate. This results in a lower overall gearing from 2nd to 5th which translates to stronger acceleration throughout the gears. Maximum speed suffers a bit but the lost is trivial.
