Default sulfur smell

i mentioned this a little while back, and i went to a mechanic and he told me to just try better gas. when i tried, there was a significant difference in the smell i was getting form high revs, but just recently after maybe the third fill up on premium, i'm getting the smell again.
the smell is jsut like sulfur, this mornign i smelled it from my vents and then i opened the window and it was the same crap smell i would smell from my exhaust. the smell from the vents was noticably more, for lack of better words, stinky
any ideas what this is?
thanks
jesse

Possibly a bad o2 sensor. I hav also heard that a bad cat will do the same thing.

will i get a CEL or anything for those? cause the mechanic i talked to was telling me that, if it were any little thing wrong, the CEL would light up, even if you drove for a few minutes with the gas cap not on. so far, i haven't had a CEL or anything so i dunno, thanks

Cat: I don't think it will throw a CEL

O2: generally yes. But a o2 can run 'nominally' and not throw a CEL. Besides subies have a history of bad o2's.

ahh icic, should i bring it to dealer or something?
and if they run it through a emissions thing and nothing shows up, what does that mean haha
cause i brought it to my normal mechanic and he hooked it up to a smell emissions thing and said there was nothing wrong with it.
and again thanks

Well, I would consult some experts. In other words let this thread simmer a bit, let some guru's confirm my suspicions... I am pretty sure they will tell you one way or the other. Once you have it narrowed down, hit the dealer and say, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure the XXXXX has gone bad, can you take a look at it?"

I also highly suggest you do a search on 'sulfer' or 'exhaust smell'. I KNOW you will find many threads there concerning this exact problem. I have seen many sicne I got here, I just can't remember off hand what the cause is.

BTW, if all else fails hit the mid-west forum and leave a thread/note for 'hondaslayer' or Jeremy......or maybe his name is 'hondatech' I forget but he knows more about sbuies than most of America's subaru dealer mechanics combined.

The problem is most likely that you are buying your gas in NJ.

Your car was designed to meet CA emissions. The problem is CA emissions is designed for CA gas which is very low in Sulphur.
The Federal Standard is a Max of 1/10 of 1% (1000ppm)
CA Max is 200ppm
Most gas found in the northeast is around 200ppm

You can try taking it to the dealer and telling them about the smell, they may be able to help you but don't be surprised if they don't.
