Default turned on heat for a sec, now no A/C

Apparently you can't search the forums for "A/C"...

I bought a '96 OBS in May, and when I test drove the car, the A/C was unbelievably cold. I didn't register the car until this week, and I noticed the A/C was only kinda cold.

This afternoon as I left work, I noticed the air wasn't that cold, so I turned it to hot and then immediately back to cold. I didn't actually turn the right hand dial to heat, I turned the middle temp control to hot. And then...no A/C at all. When the dial is set to A/C or vent, it feels like a hairdryer is blowing in my car. It feels abnormally hot.

The compressor spins when set to A/C but it blows out extremely hot air all of the sudden. Is there a mixer door or something that is stuck? Why would the vented air from outside feel so damn hot?

When you turned the temp dial, the cable may have broken or become disconnected. This would cause the air blend door to remain in the "hot" position regardless of where the dial is set.
If that's what happened, the fix may be as simple as reattaching the cable if it just came off. OTOH if it broke you'll need a new one. To find out what really happened you have to take a look in there.

OK I'll have to check that out tomorrow. Where is this cable I'm looking for?

It goes from the temp dial to the HVAC box. It may be accessible/visible if you look under/behind the dash, or you may have to partially disassemble the center console.

Well I need to install a CD player this weekend, so I guess I'll look around and see what I can find in that area.

The little plastic tab that holds the end of the cable snapped off. As a temporary fix, I got a pair of needle nose pliers and pulled the cable to switch it to the cold side. It's working now at least.
