Default Volvo will get new badges

Quote:
According to chief executive Stephen Odell, it appears that Volvo models will finally get new badges, as the manufacturer is planning to change them due t o the fact that many people are confused about these numbers such as S40, V50 etc. Of course, this won’t happen overnight, said Odell who also added that a simpler hierarchy will appear later in 2010.

Numbers are hard to understand. Maybe they want to adopt a more detailed naming method, such as the:

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X MR Touring
Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec C Type RA-R
Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works GP Package

actually if you look at studies, the buying public psychologically associate the cryptic naming system for cars with being more premium.

They may be better off using a coding system for the cars that is a bit more logical...

As soon as they give them actual names... the cachet of the brand is diluted.

+1
This was the reason Lincoln dropped their traditional, storied names for alphabet soup. Of course, no one has any idea what name goes on what car though

I think it'd be cool if they just did different colors but the cars not necessarily having anything to do with the color.

Volvo Black
Volvo White
Volvo Shocking Pink
Volvo Red Burnt Sienna edition

or yeah the name of the type of car

Volvo Shooting Brake
Volvo small saloon
Volvo medium saloon
Volvo luxury saloon
Volvo estate wagon
volvo convertible coupe`

I hate BMW numbering system. You would have to be a genius to know what all the models meant.

Add to that, the next 2 numbers are the engine size,

ie: 325 is a 3 series, 2.5 liter engine.

Anything with an x is all wheel drive, not sure what the other letters mean.

That used to be the case, but not any more for most engines.

Volvo's naming system is not really confusing.
S is for sedan, V is for Wagon, XC is for Crossovers
40 is small car, 60 is medium size, 80 is large
50 and 70 are wagons.
Seems pretty simple to me.

Don't forget C for coupe.

I guess maybe the only confusing thing is the v50 is just a wagon s40.. maybe v40 would be less confusing?

My bad, didn't realize they stopped naming that way. I guess it gets confusing when you have a 318, 325, 328, 330, 335 all in your history while your competitor has always been an A4. Makes sense to stick with a couple numbers and call it a day.

I think this one of those, if you have to ask or don't know, then you have no business knowing type of things.

When see "328" I think meh
I see"335i" I think cool
I see "M3" I think hell yeah

Same with the Benz. Those who know what an E350 is, vs the E63, know what time it is.

But to that point, folks buying Volvos don't know. They don't see a S60 and "HELL YEAH A S60! That's serious bidniz"

Right, so just stick with that and chop all the excess off. What is a Z4 sDrive35i?

BTW does that also mean the 6 bigger than the 5?

IIRC, they wanted to do odd numbers for sedans and even for coupes. hence, the z3 turning into the z4. But they sorta abandoned the plan shortly afterward because the 3 series coupe would become the 4 series and that just didn't make any sense for some historical-cosumer-recognition dealio.

i comes and goes; pretty meaningless since BMW sells nothing with carbs any more.

Oddly enough ti used to mean dual carbs on the 2000s and 16-2002s and tii indicated fuel injection, but that was a long time ago.

A C30 is a hatchback S40. its not really a coupe, its in the hatchback/shooting brake category.

The C still stands for Coupe though, 2 door. The C70 is also in that category.

enter: coupe doesn't mean 2 doors, it's blah blah blah
