2011 Kia Sportage revealed ahead of Geneva Motor Show

Kia revealed today the all-new Sportage, showing a dramatic shift in design direction when it will make it official debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show. Clearly inspired by the 2011 Kia Sorento, the all-new Sportage is a fresh, bold, athletic and sporty design that blends the key features of an SUV. The new car is lower, longer and even wider than the previous generation model and will offer more space for people and cargo, with improved ride quality thanks to a longer wheelbase. “Sportage was the car that really made the breakthrough for Kia in Europe and the all-new version will make people sit up and take notice just as the original did. I am convinced it will begin a remarkable new chapter in the Kia story.” said Michael Cole, Managing Director of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd. The world premiere of the all-new Sportage will take place at 08.45 on 2 March, 2010 on the Kia Stand (No 6441) in Hall 6 at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Big blind spots for a little SUV. I'm not a fan of high beltlines in general, but it looks nice enough... makes me think of a Mitsu. I wonder what the ground clearance will be; it looks substantial.

^ are you talking about the C pillar area? Everything you'd see out of glass there you should have in your side view mirrors. If you can see the side of your car in them, they aren't adjusted properly.

What is it? The Sportage compact S.U.V. has been part of Kia’s lineup since 1993. (Don’t feel bad, most people never noticed it before now.) But fresh new packaging and a 176-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder (with a turbo version on the way) could put the 2011 Sportage on many shopping lists.
Is it real? Yes, but if you ever saw or drove the previous generation Sportage, you might not believe it. The all-new 2011 Sportage is further proof that the Korean automaker has made huge improvements since those humble beginnings.
What they said: “Good design should never feel forced,” said Peter Schreyer, Kia’s chief design officer, during the news conference.
What they didn’t say: Kia has not announced pricing for the Sportage, which goes on sale this fall.
What makes it tick? A 176 horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and a turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder are available, and both come mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Either engine can be had with two or four-wheel drive.
How much, how soon? Expect only a modest bump from the current 2010 Sportage base price of $16,995 when the new model goes on sale later this year. Compact S.U.V.’s, like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, cost several thousand dollars more.
How does it look? I saw the Kia Sportage for the first time during the Geneva auto show and thought I was at the wrong stand, the new model looks so much better than past efforts. A closer look in New York only slightly alters those first impressions. The 2011 Sportage looks modern, solid, and substantial.

Montreal, Quebec – Kia has unveiled the Sportage SX at the Montreal International Auto Show, debuting a 2.0-litre turbo gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine that produces the power of a V6 with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder. The new Sportage SX will start at $36,995 and include Kia’s new UVO infotainment technology and additional standard equipment.
“The addition of the SX package to the all-new 2011 Sportage further enhances our positive momentum on the vehicle while introducing a whole new dimension to both design and power, including exceptional fuel economy,” said Robert Staffieri, marketing director of Kia Canada. “The Sportage SX completes our powertrain offering for Canadians and the 2.0-litre Turbo GDI provides a high level of world-class technology. The Sportage is the first vehicle in Canada to debut this all-new flagship engine.”
The Sportage SX will use a six-speed automatic transmission, engineered and manufactured by Kia, which is one of the most compact and fuel-efficient transmissions in the market today. It includes a new feature, Neutral Control, that effectively shifts it into neutral when stuck in traffic, when the transmission is in Drive and the brakes have been applied for more than two seconds, to improve fuel economy. An integrated hill assist control prevents any vehicle rollback.
Standard features on the SX include pushbutton start, panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, ventilated driver’s seat, UVO infotainment system, seven-speaker premium sound system, rear spoiler, leather seating and auto-dimming mirror with Homelink.
The 2011 Sportage will be available in LX, EX and SX trim levels, with the LX and EX powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine.

As part of Kia's design-led transformation, the Sportage has become a strong player within the Kia line-up, offering power and class-leading fuel economy(1).

SX models take a solid foundation and up the ante with a more powerful four-cylinder turbo engine, exterior styling enhancements and unique interior options. The 2011 Sportage SX front-wheel drive (FWD) features a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $25,795(2) while all-wheel drive (AWD) models feature a starting MSRP of $27,2952.

The Sportage SX joins the 2011 Optima Turbo as Kia's second vehicle in the U.S. to feature the powerful Theta II 2.0-liter Turbo GDI engine and adds unique exterior and interior features and luxury appointments to provide consumers a high performance and high value CUV. In combination with a highly efficient six-speed automatic transmission, the new Sportage SX features up to 256 horsepower while maintaining class-leading fuel economy(1) of 27 miles per gallon on the highway, better than any other turbo-equipped compact CUV on the market today. In addition to powertrain enhancements, the Sportage SX employs sport-tuned suspension featuring firmer shock and strut rates for improved handling and dynamic performance over non-SX models.

On the outside, SX models receive unique 18" alloy wheels, a signature SX grille, dual exhaust, and special side sill moldings. Exterior updates are complemented by SX-specific interior appointments adding more refinement inside the cabin, including standard aluminum door sills and a sleek new supervision gauge cluster. Available exclusively on the Sportage SX, Orange and Blue interior color packages offer more interior color choices for potential buyers. The Orange Color Package includes orange stitching on the steering wheel, center console, and seats coupled with orange accents on the door panels and air vents. A unique blue patterned cloth seat and blue interior accents are included as part of the Blue Color Package.

More Powerful, Fuel-Efficient SX Engine
Kia Motors' Theta II 2.0-liter Turbo GDI engine delivers significant performance with a powerful inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces up to 256 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of peak torque. The Sportage SX turbo utilizes a twin-scroll design which offers improved combustion efficiency, more available low-end power, and reduced turbo-lag as compared to more traditional single-scroll turbo systems.

The twin-scroll design features two valve-operated exhaust gas inlets responsible for feeding exhaust flow through separate paths into the turbine. Utilizing a divided manifold, exhaust gasses from separate cylinders travel more efficiently into the turbocharger's turbine, avoiding possible interference. The result is a system that improves efficiency and pressure distribution, lowers exhaust and cylinder temperatures, and prevents loss of exhaust energy. The quantity of the air entering each cylinder is increased, resulting in more power.

Sportage LX and EX trims come standard with a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), offering more power (up to 176 hp(3)) and better fuel economy (22/31 city/highway(4)) than the previous 2.7-liter V6 engine.
