Best Tranny for the Job

Got a quick question lookin into a ej20t conversion, but had some questions about the trannies? what is the best tranny j spec or not for a us wrx ej20t conversion? thanks everybody

gee i could only imagine how much that would be, i take it you can only get those trannies from prodrive themself. how would that cost anyways? i really looking subaru wise, what tranny would be the best. thanks though

You should be able to get one for around 100K USD.

There are a few options, from what I understad the stock (JDM WRX) subaru trannies don't have problems with the EJ20s because they don't produce as much gear-crashing torque as the EJ25s.

Your best bet is to do a search in this forum, I'm sure this has been covered a few times. And don't forget, while there are some differences, the US EJ20 and the JDM versions, it won't affect your transmission choice.

Isn't the ProDrive aut tranny the one the Knight Racing used in their RS-Ts for the 2001 North American rally series? I was talking to one of them about it and I seem to remember that their trannies cost about $12-15k. They never had a tranny break on their cars and they were running close to 450 lb/ft of torque out of those turbo EJ25s.

Beside that there is also an STi 6-speed box that's a little stronger but those still go for $8000. I spoke with Gettrag about custom building an indestructable tranny for my car and they said they'd do it for about $10k. There's a new gearset that someone had advertised for about $3000 that didn't look to bad, would very likely work in an EJ20T. There is also the STi ver5 gearbox which is what most of the independent Subaru rally cars use in other parts of the world. I think those go for $2500 and sacrifice a bit of top end for a lot more acceleration.

The transmissions that we use are not Prodrive units in anyway. We designed them using the stock 4EAT in the 98 model. We are currently building the 99 and up 4EAT. The price for a fully prepped rally gearbox with full manual control to include center differential is $6500.00. Shifter and cooler are supplied. Electronics for the trans is also supplied and the electronic shifter is an option.(this is currently against the ProRally rules at the moment.)
They handle the torque and horsepower of the 2.5 engine rather well, but we did have one failure of the trans last year at LSPR with a cooler line getting pinched and it fried the rear bearing. Nice feature of the box is that it goes into limp mode and I transited the 40 miles back to town.
Other than that failure we get 5-6 full rallies on one gearbox before it is toredown for inspection and a $1400 rebuild. If you completely lunch the box it is $2400-3000 rebuild. Still compared to the options I will take the Manu-Matic style gearbox. How it will perform behind a standard 2.0 ltr is a bit overkill. Fluid trans and torque converters like torque. The 2.0 ltr simply cannot out perform the 2.5 in this catergory. Any questions feel free to mail me.

IIRC the new version 7 tranny has a 6 bolt pattern I would think that this would be the same arrangement for the new RS, previous ones uses a 4 bolt pattern I don't think you can modify the 4-bolt to fit the new sixbolt pattern I could be wrong though.

IIRC, the 98s were 4 bolt, the Phase II blocks are 6 bolt. The only problem with dropping in the six speed is fitting it under the car, you'll have to do some custom work.

ahhhh dont say that nick. how do i know i sent the right block to the machine shop???

Don't worry about it... I believe that even if it only has 4 bolts and the trans has 6, you can still bolt through all 4.

If anyone is making enough power to snap 4 bolts off the trans bellhousing... congrats, you're the fastest Subaru in the world.

BTW, torque converters are held to the flex plates with 4 smaller bolts... just to give you an idea how much pressure 4 bolts can really hold.
