You and me both. I've only been telling them about it since 2003. They just don't seem to listen. If it's not closed deck it must not be any good. Hah!

Because they fear the myth of open deck + "thinner" cylinder sleeves = ka-boom!!

What they don't know about hybrid open deck builds (EJ18, 22E, 251, 253) is that the proof is in the pudding. We are the ones who lead the way for open deck NA block owners, and give them other options than swapping.

Very nice numbers on your build. Kudos to you man!

Yup, I'm planning on turning the boost up soon. I might have a RnD Budget in which case injectors are coming and I'm going to figure out at what point the rods break.

Default Time to join the boosted club, parts on the wayuntill

Alright its time to boost the 2.2l i have roughly a month untill i start so untill then i need you guys help me to get all the parts together (Im in A.I.T for the national guard and will be coming home in april). The car is a 1997 impreza obs with a single port MAF ej22e. So far ive purchased a td04 turbo (not sure which year model) with about 40k on it, 06-07 intercooler and a Greddy E-manage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a good understanding of diesel motors through my M.O.S but have never turbo'ed a N/A vehicle so im a newbie when it comes to that. All the manual labor i can do myself

^^^ Welcome. I'm in the middle of a build right now, so I can answer some of your questions. There are many many threads on here and on RS25.com that have done what you are wanting to do. Do some searching and asking questions (like you are here). I did at least 2 years of researching before deciding to start buying parts and putting this together and more than that saving. I'm still learning more stuff everyday. Definitely keep reading what other guys are putting into this and what problems they had.

For your car, what are you looking for it to do and what kind of power do you want to put down? Realize that the N/A pistons in these motors will not hold up to too much boost and won't hold up to hardly any detonation. The general consensus I have found is about 5 psi is the limit for your N/A motor with your compression. You have the same car as me, and our motors have 9.7:1 CR so a little boost goes a long way. And the nice thing about that is if you tune it right, use premium and don't knock, that low boost setup is known to take a stock wrx. And we have more low-down torque, so we don't need so much boost.

If you want a better and faster car, there is more money and time you need to put in. If you want higher boost safely, the best idea is to lower your compression. A cheap and somewhat easy way to do this is to get
better heads. DOHC EJ25 heads have been used many times and with good results and this puts you at a much safer 8.5 ish CR (I don't know for certain, but its around there). Another benefit of this is header options. No doubt you have noticed nobody makes headers for the single porters. With pretty much any other set of heads the dual port manifolds work, and you can use a set of wrx headers. And the heads flow a heck of a lot better than the EJ22s.

Or you can buy pistons. Wiseco makes turbo legacy EJ22 pistons or you can get customs done by many of the piston manufacturers. But that is $$$.

One more thing about boosting your car. Your transmission will not handle a lot of power and/or abuse. A general number that most people think the transmissions will fail at is about 240-250 hp. Unless you want to buy new transmissions, don't push that much power. Or start saving for a 6 speed.

Tons of good info out there, make sure to do a lot of research.

Thanks for the info man i've been researching and saving for about a year now, as far as power i will be more the happy with 5psi and around 200hp as torquey as our engines are that would be plenty of fun, plus i need a reliable ride to get back and forth to work, but to make the drive a little more fun to lol which fuel pump are you using and do you have a build thread i can look at to get info?

Good deal. Yeah, you can have plenty of fun with a low boost setup. This link is an AWESOME thread. Lays out many things that will be helpful for what you are planning on.

I'm going to run a walbero 255LPH, however you may not need to up your fuel pump if you don't go over 5 psi. However it will not hurt other than having to pay for it and put it in your fuel tank.

My build thread is here. Good luck with your build!
