i have a thread in the trans forum but i thought i would check here if any of you are having issues with notchy shifting or overheating the sti trans? yesterday it was in the mid 90's out and after driving on the highway for about an hour then parking for an hour and driving some more i noticed that the trans was really notchy. im planning on changing the fluid but are any of you that do road race/endurance having problems with heat? what are you doing to fix it? it shifted fine this morning after it cooled off so i think its heat related. i also have a fmic and a rs hood with no scoop.

I think you don't have Subaru Extra S in the transmission and it's eating the Synchros.

This question is regarding a 6mt in 90deg street traffic? It runs about 400deg F hotter on a track and Should not grind under either condition.

I question the 400 degree comment. I'll bet it's running 200-240 degrees on track.

The old Spec C 6MT had an external transmission cooler stock, but I'm not sure what the exact reason for it was. I did track days with and without one and didn't really notice much difference.

I run Valvoline 75W90 Synthetic trans oil in my strictly track STI, and never have a problem. Sounds to me like you need to change the trans oil ASAP and see if that helps.

Castrol Syntec 75-90 in mine with lots of autox and track days. No problems so far and it's good in both hot and cold weather.

You guys that think you know better than Subaru... You really amuse me. Don't you think Subaru would love to run cheap assed transmission fluid in their trannies and NOT have to both source and stock Extra-S which is ONLY used in the 6 speeds if there wasn't a reason for it?
I believe Extra-S was a response to premature Synchro wear problems in the 6MT's. |

my dealership puts in regular oil too as they don't wanna hassle with how subaru doesn't sell extra-s by the quart.
I'm another regular 75-90 user. Next go around I'm think I'm tossing in some redline shock proof to my cocktail. |

Motul Gear 300 is all I use in my 6MT!!!! Love it!!
If you did a survey, you would find that is what the vast majority of STi track cars use. |

I think Gear 300 is good too, hell for all I know Extra-S IS Gear 300. It's not the stuff you buy at the local parts store though.
