I just got my new 2011 wrx 2 weeks ago and this morning noticed a huge 6 inch crack along the passenger side of the front windshield, that looks to be started from a rock chip no bigger then the head of a pin. I dont recall hearing a rock hit my window and even if it did, the window seems like it should be able to take a bigger hit then that and be fine. My ins. deductible is 1k for window replacement and the best deal i can find is 650 for a new window out of pocket. My question is should I try and fight that the window is defective and get some sort of warranty work done through Subaru or is that a lost cause.
what do you all think? |

Lost cause. I would talk to your insurance company about deductible vs. premium cost..
I have full coverage on a couple of cars with a total value of around 50k.. The difference in price between a $500 deductible and a $50 deductible was less than $5.00 a month... A lot of folks get wrapped up in trying to get premiums as LOW as possible and don't realize that in certain circumstances you are giving up quite a bit of coverage for a teeny bump in premium.. If this is the case for you Id just bump up the insurance and wait a while until you uh.. *Ahem* get a chip in your windshield a month or so down the road and get it handled for cheap. |

Nope. Glass is not defective. It is common sense actually. If a rock the size of a pinhead hits glass what do you think it will do? It is glass for crying out loud. Sometimes if it is hit hard enough it will shatter. If it is hit with less force it will crack. Sometimes it will hit with a force soft enough it will chip. Once it chips it will crack. This is why we have insurance.
If you try and fight it, you will lose. Subaru will require the dealership to take pictures of the glass, and the damage. The moment they see it, they will deny it wasting your time. Last edited by blackfang; 01-03-2011 at 02:56 PM. |

Wait, the cheapest you found a replacement was 650?
Seems like a pretty high price to me to tell you the truth |

1k deductible for glass? I have 0 deductible for glass. If it breaks, it gets replaced. It does not cost much!
As for deductible vs premium, I agree. I go with the lowest deductible that is worth paying for. If its $5 difference for 6 months, but its half the deductible, I would rather pay the money now. Maybe california (insurance) laws are different... |
