Default Mirrors on F1 cars

Ok... dumb question, but one that's I've been wondering while. Why don't the aero engineers of F1 cars make the mirrors shaped like wings to generate downforce? I know they have to be a specific size, but I'd think you could make the side away from the driver much more aerodynamic than the current crop are and generate a little more downforce...

Just curious... must be a slow day at work or something

MAYBE IT'S A REGULATIONS ISSUE??

edit: my bad. even the suspension arms are shaped for down force, so it really should not be an issue.

deit 2: sorry, they're not shaped for down force, just to reduce drag.

check out www.F1mech.com

cheers,
Gil

Cool site, thanks for the link.

Still doesn't answer my question, though

no sense in having downforce in the middle of the car...plus youd have to have some heavy ass mirror supports to withstand any worth while df

They used to have winglets sticking up off of the side of the engine compartment (over the radiators) which looked ridiculous...

Jordan also runs a small wing behind the TV camera pod on top of the engine intake... you can kinda make it out here...

Have to agree, they really don't want downforce in that portion of the car, that is why they always try and make them SO small. It would simply be too little downforce for too much work.

Reminds me of the dark days of the X-Wings.....oh wait, that was only the first half of the 1998 season.

Found a picture of the Sauber from 1998 with the "X Wings" If I rememebr right, they named them after their sponsor's headquarters, the Petronas Twin Towers. Alesi had one ripped off by an air hose at a pit stop during the Argentinian Grand Prix. Everyone but Williams, Minardi, and McLaren ran them for a few races before the FIA banned them on safety grounds. I believe the late Dr. Harvey Postelwaite first used them on a Tyrell in 1997 at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Did the work? The teams said they did, but this may be a case of money see, monkey do.

I also just remembered that when the Prost team ran them, the made a mistake in the manufacturing of the ride side wing post. It was too big and blocked the refuelling nozzle, so they ran with only one Xwing. It didn't make a difference.
