Default Porsche confirmed today. Porsche’s new small SUV model will be called the ‘Macan’

Quote:
For a while now, we’ve been calling the upcoming fifth model in Porsche’s lineup the ‘Cajun,’ Well, it’s not going to be called that, as Porsche confirmed today. Porsche’s new small SUV model will be called the ‘Macan’ – a name derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics – core characteristics of the new off-road car.
“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG. “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.”
Production of the Porsche Macan will start production at the company’s Leipzig plant in 2013. It is expected to create the same buzz and sales as the Porsche Cayenne.

Damnit, why they gotta do this? Just when I get my wife satisfied driving the LL Bean 3.0 Outback, Porsche has to threaten to make a mini-SUV that she will actually want to own...

Though maybe I can deter her with the depreciation argument. Did you know that the Cayenne has the highest depreciation rate of pretty much any vehicle on the market? They may not be the absolute number 1, but they are pretty darn close. Maybe that can buy me 2 or 3 years and we'll get her a used Cajun (I like that name better)...

The word is pronouced Ma Chan. I study two Indonesian martial arts systems, Pa Macan is one of the sub-systems. Pa Macan or Pa Machan is (Pa)Father (Macan)Tiger.

I'm sure it will be an impressive drive like all Porsche products.

And an incredible financial security-killing waste of money for 99% of people who purchase or lease one.

They (Porsche/VW) must be ticked that LR was able to bring the Evoque to market before the Macan and steal the thunder in this nich-market so to speak.

Edit: The Q5 is rated best in class, so Porsche could do worse:

I don't like the sound of it either. Makes me think of Porsche Pecan.

"off-road car". Because so many people were off-roading their Cayennes, that it makes sense to expand their off-road lineup. I think we need Porche trucks too for all the Porches that are hauling firewood around.

I really hoped it was going to be a 3-door, like this.

Production-grade, a bit posh, and a good performer, a bit more mainstream than a Local Motors Rally Fighter.

Still hoping that they are mulling over a 3-door fastback like this.

Autoevolution has run pictures of the new Porsche Macan, spy-shot scooped in heavy disguise. The website doesn’t say so, but the pics were clearly taken outside the Nürburgring.

The location, deep-dish rear wheels, massive front brakes and a motley array of exhausts is encouraging. All of us who want this truck to light a sports spark under Porsche’s SUVs can feel confident: the chassis looks well settled into ‘fast road’ development.

Don’t draw premature aesthetic conclusions. Though some parts are the finished example, the final design will differ for sure. Do enjoy the proportions of driver to vehicle, and car to itself – quite a bit tighter than Panzermera & Cayenne. Many of my forty-something brethren will buy into the spirit of this machine, and it should pull the younger set, too.

Macan may be to Cayman what Cayenne is to 991. I feel an emergent symbiosis between Cayenne and latest ’11 that may explain my sense of Cayman’s loneliness, or maybe I’ve been watching too much Star Wars. I sense (Luke) that Macan could add something as yet unforeseen to baby tin-top ballsiness – need to research the psychology here. Add your comments and/or abuse.

These screw-on bits á la 993 GT2 add mucho DIY sexiness: a performance/styling option that Porsche might consider offering on its sports truck. Actually, why not offer 993 Evo Club Sport-style arches on everything? *pause* – hear that? It’s the PRs changing the subject.

Hope these stay up a while; if not the link is at top.

Is it new from the ground up or is it a version of something already sold as a VW or Audi?

No way it's new from the ground up. The NRE required for that would put it almost in a class by itself based on MSRP. To compete with the rest mentioned above it's gotta be a big engine shoved into some existing platform w/ Porsche finishes.

Macon = Q5 = A4?

I'd be more inclined to think it was using the Q3.

That rear in shot in 3rd and 4th picture looks odd.
