Moore Performance & Race Parts is proud to offer the 5 MT Subaru owner an option to finally strengthen their transmission with a well engineered, attractive looking package that is designed to increase rigidity while providing many years of service in all conditions!

The Moore Performance & Race Parts "Blast Plates" are heavy duty steel, tig welded and are finished with a layer of brilliant black powdercoat. The package also includes high strength (tubular) aluminum spacers and grade 10.9 hardware.

We are currently finishing up the production versions of our Blast Plates and were ready to start taking orders! On one of our higher HP test cars we coupled a set of prototype blast plates to our (soon to be released) 5 mt transmission and we were able to safely harness almost 400wtq and over 500whp on a local Mustang dyno, followed by many miles of hard driving!

The Blast Plates are a perfect upgrade for any 5 speed manual transmission from stock horsepower levels to over 500+ horsepower! Shown below is a 3d image of the production item and actual product photos are soon to follow. So we have been getting a lot of questions on this! A lot of interest and a lot of questions! For those of you that aren't familiar with some of the transmission brace plates people have made in the past here is a pic of everything that will be in the kit. It will come with all of the hardware required including aluminum spacers to properly mount the plates to the transmission. The plates are bolted through existing bolt locations that hold the two halves of the transmission together. By bolting these plates onto the outside around the gear set it increases the stiffness of the casing to improve gear mesh tolerances under shock loading and high torque situations. These plates are made of very heavy gauge steel (plates are 3/16" thick!) and steel is ~2.5 times stiffer than aluminum. These were designed to make them as stiff as possible while still keeping our cost down to be able to offer these great prices!

Here is a dyno vid showing some of our earlier trial runs using one of our test vehicles wearing the Blast Plates and our 5 MT transmission. On this pull the car made 507whp and just under 390wtq.

What excatly does this do, to strengthen the transmission? How does it help the glass gears in our factory 5 spds?

Was the test car on stock trans or was this with an aftermarket gearset? Have any before and after information on shaft deflection?

I talked to Ryan Moore about this and he said the car has their built 5 speed with the prototype plates. There is a pretty big thread on plates like this that used to be made by another company before they went out of business. From what I have read they seem to help reduce case flex. There are definitely some positive reviews on this type of product already out there.

Yeah I've read the thread you are referring to. I've already got a built transmission with straight cut gears and dog engagement but chassis flex is just the next thing I'm worried about.

What does this improve on? does it make the transmission hold more power? or is it like stiff engine mounts and holds the transmission from moving?

The problem is the case is 2 peices and doesn't have good mounting areas (for lack of a better term) inside the transmission, so what happens is the more power you have the more the transmission casing is going to flex out of spec, this will basically stiffen up key parts of the case to improve the amount of flexing.

Very nice explanation. In a nutshell the product will increase case rigidity to help improve gear engagement when under load. The product is designed to be a cost effective way help minimize 5 speed transmission failures with stock or aftermarket gearsets.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge on this product, but how involved would the installation be? I'd be all in for this alternative if it helps hold power without the cost of the other alternatives of different gearsets or new trannys.

Installation is fairly straight forward, and involves only 8 bolts (easy to see when we post photos). The Blast Plates will help increase the strength of any 5 speed transmission, and we are testing to failure right now in two cars (stock gears and Moore Performance gears) to find out exactly when and how a gearset will break in real world conditions with the Blast Plates installed.


Edit: I was just reviewing this with my design guy and he said that he is pretty certain the trans will have to be removed from the car to complete the install. This is due to the length of the bolts that join the transmission together and they will most likely not clear the trans tunnel. The prototypes were installed with the transmission out of the car. We will verify these details.

Pending how the stock gear tranny does and the conclusion of how involved the installation is (might just have to wait for a new clutch for me to install these) I'm in. Excited to hear more information as it comes along.

We'll keep you all posted and the guys over at Procomp Race Systems are going to do their own round of testing as well on a stock trans, so you'll be able to see a little bit of independent R&D there. I'll keep the updates coming and I have a few of you signed up already.

Here is a sneak peak at the pre production prototype that we are just finishing. We made a couple other sets of plates in the past that we have been using but they weren't as well designed as this latest set. These are just so we are 100% sure the fitment is perfect and that you are getting the best product!

This set was just cut up quickly at the shop and definitely not as nice as the production versions will be!

Just have to weld them up real quick.


We will get them on a trans for some more pics in the next couple days!

I'm willing to make #10 on the list but if the length of the bolts that join the transmission together will most likely not clear the trans tunnel then how did you get the transmission installed with the blast plates attached?

What type of modification to the trans tunnel are we talking about?
