Post NASIOC 50-100mph List

What is this?

This post is meant to contain a list of 50-100mph times posted by NASIOC users. The times should be accompanied by basic info about the vehicle (modifications, fuel, weight, etc). A tandard format will be described below to allow for easy comparison. These times can be used as a benchmark for comparing the impact of modifications, acceleration at given power levels, and/or 1/4 mile times.

Why 50-100mph?

On other forums (namely 6speedonline) the 60-130mph time is used as a benchmark. This range is used instead of 1/4 mile times and speeds because the 1/4 mile is highly dependent on track conditions and launch. 60-130mph is sufficiently fast enough to avoid launch/traction differences in most cases. But, after some consideration it was determined that 60-130mph was not practical for many Subaru's. It was chosen to use the 50-100mph range.

This range is fast enough that traction is not an issue on most AWD cars and the top end is not too difficult to reach (similar to a normal road tuning log or trap speed for a near-stock car). This range should not cause issues (due to traction) on most Subaru's, and the top speed is such that it is accessible for even stock cars quite easily.

Why not post dyno numbers or 1/4 mile times?

We do already have a similar list for "Road Dyno" numbers. This is based on the Airboy spreadsheets and is a valuable resource. This info is still very useful, in fact for many things it is much more useful than 50-100mph times (like looking at powerbands, etc), but it does have a few downfalls. First is that the numbers are highly dependent on user inputs. If you have a highly modified vehicle, this becomes difficult. Even something as simple as entering vehicle weight incorrectly can skew the numbers.

The next main issue is that a dyno number doesn't directly correlate to how quick your car is (as compared to someone else's). Making more power doesn't mean your car will accelerate more quickly. Gearing, weight, aerodynamics, etc all come into play. Having an actual time is much easier to compare, and is more of a "real world" result. This also means that a 50-100mph time is something that can be compared across not only different Subaru models, but across other platforms as well (so feel free to post results from other vehicles!).

What do I need to do?

When you do the run, you can basically do anything you want to get from 50-100mph as fast as possible: use whatever gears you'd like, brake boost, start slower and go WOT through 50mph, etc. As long as you are on a flat surface it is OK. To get on the list, you need some way to confirm the time. The best ways to do this are with a data log, a video of the speedometer, or best yet a VBOX or similar device. Please post one of those things as proof, and then fill out the following information, using the formatting described below. Once all of that is in place, I will update your time onto the master list.

What is the format?

Two sets of info need to be posted. The first is a single line for use in the overall list. The second is a summary of your modifications that will stay in your post and people can review.

Here is the format for the single line of info. You can use the code tags if you want, otherwise just enter the data in a line and I can do the formatting when I update the list. Please write "NA" if you don't have that piece of info. For induction, please list what turbo you are using. (Code tags purposely broken to make it easier to copy/paste.)

[code]Username Year Make Model HP TQ 50-100 1/4 ET 1/4MPH Lbs L Cyl Induction Boost Fuel[code]

Here's an example:

[code]xluben 2011 Subaru WRX 462 492 4.5 NA NA 3400 2.5 F4 20G XTR [code]

And this is the format for the summary of modifications on the car:

Thought I'd give my thoughts on the data at this point. Using seconds, weight, and a conversion factor gained from the known hp of my car (approx. 340whp on a Mustang), I have assigned Mustang dyno horsepower estimates to the Subarus that provided both time and weight. For multiple submissions of the same car, I took the highest number submitted:

AFPSubaru: 607whp
Xluben: 397whp
amalgrover: 392whp
jay05: 382whp
gold rush: 356whp
juanmedina: 340whp
Dave D. (using my 3500lb/5.4 run): 340whp
renosubby: 324whp
Xluben(VF52): 251whp
Synolimit: 251whp
J Maher: 245 whp

Also of interest is my first run with the cargo box, where I obtained a figure of 315whp, with my cargo box on. This would be a 10 percent difference due to wind resistance, which is consistent with the 10 percent poorer gas mileage I get on the freeway when the box is on. What can I say? I'm a math teacher on summer break right now!

you are VERY low on the whp estimates. you can't really estimate this based solely on weight over time. gearing, tire size, etc. are going to play into this quite a bit. then, you still have to factor in unmeasureable variables, like in my case where i had wheel spin at all 4 wheels due to it being like 35-40* outside with summer tires that weren't warmed up. i had to get the car under control again before getting back on the gas (watch how long the shift from 2nd to 3rd took me vs. the shift from 3rd to 4th).

just fyi, on a mustang dyno my car put down over 500whp (also in airboy old and new as well as virtual dyno), and juan's car is putting down more than mine i am pretty sure. so whatever mustang dyno math you are using...i NEVER want to get on that HEARTBREAKER DYNO . unless i am racing someone for lotso cash...then i would use the "i only make 392whp" statement so i could race a slower car and win .

I agree that Dave's numbers seem way low. My 5.3s time did 390WHP on a Mustang. My 4.5s time did 460WHP on a Dynojet.

Interesting -- but it does show that shifting is a large variable in 50-100mph. Dyno pulls are done in one gear, are they not?

Not too many cars can do what mine can do -- pull well from 50-100 in a single gear. I suggest we redo this thing all using a single gear pull in a reasonable range -- say, 60-90mph. 3rd in a WRX, 4th in an STi, perhaps.

All that could have easily cost you a second. If we take off that second your figure becomes 500whp exactly in my calculations. Well said.

It is a little cooler here today and I did a couple of runs. I think I beat my best time in both runs . In my second run I started on second but It knocked after shifting (no flat food shifting) it pulled a little bit of timing on third (1.5*). I was also running 11.2-11.4 AFR uptop, it is around 75* F with 60% humidity. On the first run VD says I am making 470whp Dynojet and Airboy says 440whp..

Looks like about 4.3 and 4.2 respectively (2nd run actually looks faster). Impressive.

I was also running 11.2-11.4 AFR uptop, it is around 75* F with 60% humidity. On the first run VD says I am making 470whp Dynojet and Airboy says 440whp..

2009 STI, E85, Arizona summer (110F ambient with 18% humidity, 135F IAT, 204F coolant temp about 30 minutes of freeway driving prior to the pull). No knock encountered, which makes me feel happy about my tune. I was going slightly uphill on a long freeway offramp, which I suppose is better than downhill. First and last data points I'm using are at 32.31,49.09 and 39.62,100.66 for about 7.31 seconds 50-100.

Parts list:
Full weight (3/4 full tank, with fat driver) - ~3600 lbs
P&L Catted TurboXS downpipe
P&L HiFlo intake
1000CC DW injectors
P&P VF48
44mm EWG - venting to atmosphere
Stock Catback
Spearco TMIC - heat taped

Doing a 3rd gear virtual dyno run in these conditions after only 10 minutes of driving yields 290 whp (IAT 120F, Coolant 185F). Tuned by Junior, 342/374 at 72F ambient (asked for something conservative).

For comparison, here's a 4th gear pull I did for a virtual dyno test back in January in IL (completely flat farm road, 27F Ambient, IAT never higher than 40F ). The un-SAE corrected numbers according to VD are something silly like 380 whp. This purely 4th gear run is actually faster than my summer run by about 0.4 seconds - 6.82 seconds 50-100.

vvv I feel you - I'll happily roll down my window here at 90-95 and think it feels almost nice out, compared to a 95F/80%+ day in IL. You can really feel that 18% when it hits 115 though, I don't care who you are - and it's always 20 degrees hotter than that inside a car with black leather and suede. A/C on but it doesn't matter
