Tell me about this IPA wipedown...is it for getting any remaining stuff off before you do the sealant?
You just wet a cloth with it or use a spray bottle? |

The IPA wipedown is tricky, if done wrong the paint swells and gets soft, just an FYI. Best left to pros like Peyton here lol.

I heard the GTR's paint is great so shouldn't be any worries about more paint problems :S

Nice work Peyton, that GTR looks gorgeous.

Yes, higher concentrations of isopropyl alcohol CAN be absorbed into the paint causing swelling and softening. However, the effects are not permanent and your paint will eventually return to normal. This is similar, if not the same, as the process in which solvents leave the paint over time after a fresh spray. Now, the use of IPA is fairly straight forward. As for dilution, the more you dilute IPA the safer and less likely to cause swelling it becomes. I personally use about a 10%-15% mixture (I eyeball my mix so its not exact). Higher concentrations will removed oils and such faster however. On a side note while trying different dilutions levels I used 90% IPA straight out of the bottle and had no issues with swelling or softening on black BMW paint. Of course individual results may vary and that high of a concentration is simply not necessary. Not to mention the fact that IMO/IME it evaporates entirely to fast at that high of a concentration level to be effective. |
