Default Swift's Journal - 2006 UGM STi limited, Switzerland [Bride Japan editions installed!]

Current Status:

This thread will be a journal of the build of my 2006 STI A-line STI (aka STI limited for the guys in the states).

I bought this car brand new in 2006 as I need a 4wd for the snow and always had a passion for Subaru’s since I was young: I was glued to the screen watching Colin McRae! I decided to go for the A-line version as I preferred the more subtle look and black interior. I am based in a luxurious Swiss mountain resort and felt like this was the more appropriate choice.

My A line model came with:

Urban gray metallic exterior color
17” Enkei wheels
Black Brembo brakes
Black leather interior with heated seats
Carbon fibre 3 gauge pillar
I/C Spray function
Fog lights
Limited trunk lip

Its pretty much the same as a US limited expect I don't get a sunroof or a v limited lip

While ordering I replaced the trunk lip with a STi wing as I wanted to keep the rally look. I could also switch it up later on.

Here’s how it came out when I bought it back in 06!

Some interior pics

As soon as I bought it I wanted to modify it completely! Unfortunately in Switzerland modding is strictly regulated and mostly forbidden. This put a huge stop to my plans of rotated turbo + high power. The engine bay has to look 100% stock and any modification parts added must be approved by TUV. This affects everything, brakes, wheels, suspension, exterior mods, chassis braces, bushings, and in particular engine modifications. This also really limits my choice of brands which will be reflected in the build. I will nevertheless try to sneak in a few things here and there ☺

My main plan for the car was to create a more luxurious STi without adding weight and improving the handling and braking to suit the Swiss mountain roads. Handling first and power second.

I wanted to pay particular attention to the exterior to make it look really clean, sleek and subtle. I looked through a lot of builds on IWSTI and NASIOC and knew exactly what I wanted.

The car will still be used as a full daily driver, especially in the winter when it is my ski transporter and snow drifting machine!

I also wanted to pay a lot of attention to the interior to detract from the cheap Japanese feel. This probably goes against most of the builds I have seen and will be reflected later on. I will aim to have one of the best interiors on here.

First thing I did to the car was to get rid of the awful looking tail lights. I saw a lot of people who were painting the stock headlights and decided to get mine done in BMW steel grey which is a shade of grey that I like a lot. Thanks to all4bspinning on NASIOC for that. I also did the fronts and got some rally armor mudflaps from the U.S.A while I had the chance.

Hereís how it turned out: No more ugly chrome

Next on the list was changing the pedals to some Sullivan Racing ones I saw online. The gas pedal was specially designed for heel to toe and I have quite big feet so this definitely made it easier! Heel to toe is really easy after this mod.
The set replaces all 3 pedals. Going to get stop pedal later on down the line to finish it all off

Got the STi center caps. Pic of wheels and brakes also

Soon thereafter I took the car on a snow & ice trackday on an airport. So much fun and great to use the car for what it was meant for

Went a little overboard with the sideways action sometimes and broke my front bumper

For the twisty mountain roads in Switzerland, I really needed to upgrade the suspension a bit! Unfortunately, due to strict Swiss regulations, all modifications to the vehicle must be of a pre-approved type that has been tested by the authorities, and so my only choices were H&R. I would have loved some proper RCE Tarmac 2 coil overs.

Nevertheless, I got myself the approved H&R springs and FF/RR swaybars. Managed to get rid of the monster truck look slightly. Paired that up with some Kartboy straight endlinks and the results were pretty good!

Here’s a comparison pic between stock and lowered. I also took this opportunity to get myself a original V-Limited lip from Japan to help things out in the exterior department.

Going back to what I was talking about before vis-ŗ-vis my modification theory, this is what I have to compete against on a daily basis around here! Happens all the time, CGT, Lambos, Porsches, Ferraris, you name it! Fun to race them in the mountains on the way to restaurant though ! 600hp was a little too much for the CGT on bumpy twisty roads here hehe.

Time to improve the shifting! Full Turn in Concepts super-shifter set with some tranny cross member bushings and Group N transmission mount! The shifting is really firm and slots in very nicely in the gears. Love this mod. Now my shifter sits much lower:

The last thing I wanted to do was to bring out the rumble sound as I have always been a huge fan of the boxer noise. I looked at what was available in terms of legal exhausts and I could either get an certified Invidia Q300 or some swiss made exhaust for a lot of money ($1300+). Aftermarket downpipes are also pretty much a no-no (very illegal). Obviously, because of strict sound regulations, none of those would have satisfied my need for the boxer noise. I had to go illegal!

I researched really extensively online to try and see what sounds I preferred the most. In the end I got the Invidia N1 street exhaust, the canister wasn’t too big, it was quite discreet and it sounds awesome!

Here are come mounted pics:

Further back with the view

Basically at this point my Stage 1 modifications are completed. I am happy with the car for the moment (although I want more power) of course interior/exterior needed a lot of work still.

I have always had an urge to really build up this car as the Subaru Impreza model provides the one of the highest amount of customization possible and has great community.

So.. I've placed a big order.... surprise

In the following posts I will document Stage 2 of my modification process

Ordered a Velocity Carbon Trunk the other day, decided to go wingless for a superclean look. I really liked molded mines style so this is exactly what I wanted!

I always liked that the non-US models come with the cleared out headlights. we all have to put ours in the oven to pull out the reflectors. I'm assuming its for US safety laws.

Velocity Carbon Trunk painted and installed!!!

Obviously there are some minor fitment issues which I will need to resolve because I won't be happy till it's 100%.

Anyone have any tips with these trunks?

Also, maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me but for some reason I thought the trunk colour was slightly different?

we had some great weather in Switzerland lately

I like the looks of the trunk. I would loosen the bolts that hold the trunk in place slightly and just try moving it around a bit and then gently closing it. It's a time consuming process but it's been the most effective for me. Just take your time and be patient make minor adjustments each time.
