Default 2012 WRX: No more chrome housing headlights!

I've never been too fond of the chrome look of the 2012 headlights. I decided to research a bit and take on this project. Here's the process:

Initial picture of the car.

Pulled into the garage. Time to do this!

Bumper off.

Headlights off and into the oven. If anyone is curious, I put them in for 15 minutes at 225.

Housings out.

Scuffed them up a bit, then started painting.

I gave them plenty of light coats.

Reverse order to put it all back together.

Closeup.

Picture of car for comparison to initial picture. Also installed rear flaps, dipped the chrome trim beneath the windows and installed AVS slim window visors.

I used a thread I found here to walk me thru the process of removing and opening the headlights. Here's the link for those interested. Feel free to ask me any questions and thanks for checking this out!

Damn.. that took some balls and hard work..lol. But I have to agree with you... the chrome 2012's are hideous. No wonder the 2012 here in Hawaii are not selling and people are looking for 2011's.

A+ for you. That looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Tooootaaally agree. I was looking at some 2011s and noticed something different about them than my 2012. It took my looking at an Angel Eye Halo light mod post to tell the difference. I really hate the chrome on my car. It's a Subaru WRX for chrissakes, why should there be any chrome at all?

I actually think the chrome looks worse on any color. It's all too common and makes it look like any other car out there right now. Nice job, OP. I actually did this on my Evo back in 2003 and have continued to do so since then. Thank God my 2011 had proper headlights.

Couldn't agree with you more decipher. Subaru was on the right track giving us what we wanted since 2004 when we started baking and painting. They got it right 08-11... then some retarded subaru designer decided "lets make it look like an outback!" Ding ding... we got a retard on the committee!

Everyone has their own taste and opinion. Mine says it sucks. Hawaii says it sucks which is why the friggin 2012 owners are tinting their headlights. That black one pictured above looks awesome though. Now black out those headlights.... then let me know what everyone else thinks. Yup.. just as I thought... awesomer...lol.

OP... you should offer your services as there are some who are too afraid to bake their headlights. I was with my 04 and if you were nearby or offered a decent price for the service... I would have had you do mine.

I have a 2012 ice silver metallic wrx hatch and I dig the chrome headlights with my color combo. I feel like the black housings look cheap on silver and white. Now the red with the chrome housings...that's just hideous.

Don't mind my chromies all that much, although I would still prefer black.

awww man.... should have just traded someone with a 2011... the all chrome headlights are clean. They match up really well on red and white cars...

imo, you ruined those headlights. No more chrome ring makes it look kinda honda-rice-ish...

You did a good job with them but if it were my car, I would have left the chrome, ordered some polished wheels (think ccw LM20's) and rocked the hell out...

All you have to do with the chrome ones is remove the amber reflector and DONE

I'm very surprised by all the chrome love. When Subaru first released pics of the 2012, there was ample hate to go around on the chrome. I mean...you should read some of the comments. I thought there was going to be a full out assault on Subaru headquarters. I'm shocked by the support for chromies.

OP...I still like the look better. Any relation of your mod to a Civic is unjust and just plain rude. :-)

Thanks for all the criticism, guys! I figured there'd be a few people who liked the chrome better... I didn't hate the chrome myself, I just knew I'd like it more black. I think this flows better since the grill area is all black on our cars.

For anyone scared to try this... don't be. I was a bit nervous, but just followed the steps in this thread and was fine. Trust me when I say it was a lot more painless than I thought it would be.
