Default 12' 10k report

Well my 12' impreza 5 door sport limited CVT is at 10,200 miles and I wanted to share some thought on the car. Love the car through and through, not a big car guy but a 40 min commute in a 4x4 V8 Crew Cab was killing me. Before my Trip B reset I had averaged 31.5mpg in 9,999 miles, which is great. Please to report 0 oil consumption as I did the first oil change at 3200 and ordered the oil for the 10,700 oil change today. Maybe this is something concentrated around a certain build date?

If I had to name something I wasn't crazy about it would be the cvt. I don't hate it I am just questionable about its longevity, I'm a manual guy but like leather and sunroofs and hate giving up options to shift gears. Add that to the fact the cvt was rated at better efficiency and no 6spd was available and that's why I made the only decision that I still wonder about being the right one. The only other thing that worry's me is how loud and noisy this thing is when it's cold, I don't mean winter cold I just mean start up. I crank it in the mornings and it makes all kind of rackets before it backs out the garage.

Overall I'm really satisfied with my purchase and would mimic it providing this thing meets my expectations on getting me up the mountain to the slopes every weekend this winter!

^^ i agree. i miss shifting through the gears. the tranny noise worries me most. im used to me super quiet, super smooth, direct 6 speed in my S2000. although, i cannot comment on the loudness. my S2000 was raced prep and my DD. that thing would wake up everyone in the house, people could hear me coming before they saw me. so this is a lot more quiet, but with more than half the power of my last car.

Great update, Are you having trouble with oil/coolant consumption in the 10k miles?

I reached 10K yesterday as well. No serious problems to report. Engine braking can be annoying with cvt and she doesnt like the cold mornings but thats about it. Im avg 40mpg according to computer over entire life of the car. Changing the oil for 2nd time this weekend. Never had any fluid consumption problems either.

Why is that a "LOL" statement? Myrt has shown us pics of his dashboard/trip odometer displays. I believe him. I think his road and driving conditions are just about perfect (his departure and destination locations are close to a highway; that highway is flat; he drives at the posted speed limit; he buys gas from a quality source; etc.).

If you gave Myrt your car for a tankful of time, he'd get the same results in your car too, if he was driving in the same conditions.

I can't match Myrt's mileage because I can't match his conditions. My roads are hilly. I drive more "city" miles than he does. My gas might have more ethanol in it than his does. My car has the manual tranny, and I'm guessing that Myrt's is CVT.

Whatever. We can't all be blessed with perfect fuel economy conditions.

Add me to the 10k club too. At 10500 miles within five short months. My problems include oil consumption, squeaky seat, low coolant level, and numerous interior rattles.

About 10.9k miles now. Only problems to report is that it has acquired dual dash rattles in the last month or so. I will be taking it into the dealer in a couple of weeks for an oil change and tire rotation (I do too many of these) and they will look at it then. I suspect either A-Piller looseness or the Treble speakers on the dash. Kind of hard to isolate the exact location of the noise though. Only real complaint is the MPG is MUCH LOWER than advertised and the MPG Gauge on the console is about 5/6% overstated - dealer will have to also address/correct this - getting about 320 miles per tank prior to the light coming on in urban driving.

for all urban stop and go driving thats about right. 25-28 depending on how bad it is. If your average MPG is teens and 20's then yeah your not going to break out of the middle 20s for mpg

I can not get over 23mpg in city only driving which is bad. If I purchase this car on MPH values only it would short lived, then again it's a lease.

Default 10k miles!

I just drove from Oklahoma City, OK to Grand Canyon National Park, AZ. Overall I am pleased with the way my '12 Impreza [4dr] performed. I clocked 38.6 mpg between Albuquerque, NM and Flagstaff, AZ which included a stop by the Petrified Forest.

I have noticed that a 15 - 20 mph wind will reduce the highway mileage by as much as 20%, but the 6,000 - 8,000 ft. elevation of NM/AZ has almost no effect on the efficiency.

No problems so far and no oil consumption at the initial or 7,500 mi. services.

I think some of the noise is coming from the flat flimsy plastic under the readout. What do you think?

When the noise first started, that's what I thought; however, now not sure at all. I'll let the dealer figure it out. Only happens on bumps n the road and when I drive on Bricked pavement.

I'm nearing 10 000 km (kilometers count too, no?) I did my one and only oil change at around 6000 km. I'll nearing my second one, another 3000 km or so to go.

When you get your tires rotated do you ask them to do it as part of servicing when you get your oil changed?

I do both my own oil changes and tire rotations, one because I can't get my car to the dealer because I work 8-5 and because I don't trust anyone lol.

Okay good I do my own servicing too but I get lazy when it comes to rotating tires or anything related to taking my wheels off and remounting them.

Ya getting out the jacks, air gun, air hose, and torque wrench is a hassle and takes some time.

But it's worth it. I know that I won't cross thread my wheel nuts, and I know that I won't over-tighten the nuts so that it would be impossible to change a flat on the side of the road using the tools in the trunk.

I also mark the wheel locations when I switch from summer tires to winter tires, so that I can rotate everything properly when I remount them.

And it gives me an opportunity to look at my brake lines, disks, pads, CV boots, rubber bushings, and so on.

This is why I do my own rotations and summer/winter tire swaps.

Maybe I should look into investing in an impact wrench, at least that way it is less of a chore (how much would I be looking at)?

I am still getting used to the CVT myself and I have no worries about it's durability as Subaru is on its Second Gen CVT system and the JDM Legacy has the 296hp motor mated with the CVT and German Forester XTs also have the 240hp motor with one also. No oil or coolant consumption issues thus far and only a kinked AC drain hose which the dealer took care of in 20minutes under warranty and they threw in a courtesy wash and I was out the door in less than hour. Very happy at this point and it's a long term keeper unless Subaru comes out with something I can't resist in 2014-2015..lol

I don't bother with air tools (except for nail guns). I use a breaker bar to remove stubborn nuts and bolts, and a torque wrench to install them back to spec.

For a hobbiest (I don't do this for a living), air tools are an expensive, high-maintenance, noisy way of shaving 5 minutes off of the job. And between the compressor and the tools themselves, they require a lot of storage space. When it's a business, those 5-minute savings add up. But for a dude who rotates his tires 2x/year, it's just seems like silly overkill.

But that's just me. If air tools will make you happy, then go for it.

You have a good point, but sometimes it's not just about the time savings. Yanking on a spinner puts hard stress on your shoulders. I do all my own work on my vehicles as well (rebuild engines, swap trannies, etc), but I've had 2 rotator cuff tears - one in each shoulder - and every time I take the lazy way out, my shoulders ache the next morning from that spinner.

That said, if I didn't already own all the stuff needed because I do all that stuff, yeah I wouldn't buy it either just to rotate tires. Easier to take it to a decent shop, and there are shops that won't cross thread your lug nuts or gorilla 'em down..

I'm about to hit 10 k in kilometers though. Everything has been good thus far with the exception of some warranty work being done.

Just hit 10k recently on my 5 door, now at 10633 miles in approximately 6 months of ownership. Average MPG over those miles works out to 27.41 MPG, with a short commute to work (16 miles round trip every weekday), but plenty of highway miles in the off hours to do all those miles. Overall, a bit lower than expected, but finding out that the short commute hurts, the car barely gets warmed up before I park it, and certainly the highway miles at 65+ aren't as efficient as they are at 50-55 MPH. I just don't seem to do many miles at that sweet spot to hit the higher MPG's as rated on the sticker for highway mileage with the CVT.

No issues with the car so far (knock on wood), just a couple paint chips and a small curb rash on one rim that you really can't see easily (certainly not Subaru's fault). Oil levels have been fairly constant, ranging from 3/8" above the 'full hole' on the dipstick to dead on full. Did the first change at just over 7500 miles.

All in all, I'm still very happy with my car. Lots of fun to drive it, and no real complaints about the performance of it. Hopefully that continues for many miles to come.
