Default Screeching sound on cold start??

Hey guys. I have a 2002 wrx sedan with around 150k+ miles on it. So the problem is sometimes when I start the car after I haven't been driving it for a few hours (cold start) it gives off this really embarrassing loud screeching sound. The car runs fine, and the screeching only lasts for around 10-15 seconds. Never much longer than that. I searched and some people say idler pulley some say its the starter but I really have no clue. Any help would really be appreciated!

Thanks,
-Steve

Check tension of belts and check pulleys... If you can't do that, take it to a shop

If the sound is constant after you've released the key after starting, then you can generally eliminate the starter as the source.

More than likely, you have a loose belt which is slipping on a pulley. My 05 LGT has the same noise.

I checked it out and I'm pretty sure it was the pulley. I'll go get a new one from Subaru tomorrow and see if that fixes it. Just to make sure the pulley is the circular black one under the triangular ac compressor correct?

When you start the car, spray the belt with water from a spray bottle. It doesn't take much. Just a mist from a windex bottle. If that kills the sound faster, replace the belt. If not, it's probably a pulley.
