Talking My Weekend > Your Weekend (Racing Content!)

I had a blast, ended up winning my class (Stock FWD) and am now a 2012 Rallycross National Champion!

TULSA, Okla. (October 8, 2012) – The Sports Car Club of America’s National Championship season concluded last weekend with an additional nine titlists crowned when a record number of competitors competed at Tulsa (Okla.) Raceway Park at the SCCA® RallyCross® National Championships.

Each competitor in nine classes took runs on the two-day event, set up on natural terrain in an autocross-style course. The aggregate time for either seven or eight runs, depending on the class, determined the class finishing order for the 104 participants. Hitting the course-marker cones cost a driver two seconds per cone.

The competition was held on three unique courses. Jon Simmons, of the Nebraska Region SCCA, opened the competition with a Saturday-morning course that included a good blend of technical and brisk sections and a challenging crossover for three scored runs in Saturday’s cool and damp conditions. Changing conditions saw one of the three Prepared-All Wheel Drive class runs thrown out, leaving that class with just two scored runs. In the afternoon, Western Ohio Region’s Chris Hasting prepared a course that was slightly shorter and the most flowing of the three set-ups. Competitors ended Saturday with an additional two runs on that course to set the stage for Sunday’s finale.

The Sunday course, designed by Colorado Region SCCA’s Aaron Miller and Artic Alaska Region’s Kent Hamilton, was 1.25-miles long and took almost two minutes to complete. Not only the longest but also the most technical, a handful of classes were limited to just two runs on Sunday to determine the final results.

For the second time in as many years, Brianne Corn, of San Marcos, Texas, made history at an SCCA National Championship event. In 2011, Corn became just the third female to win an open class Championship at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo® National Championships, and then on Sunday became the first woman to ever win an SCCA RallyCross National Championship. Corn’s Modified All Wheel Drive class title came in the Vorshlag/AWD Tuning/OS Giken Mitsubishi Evolution by 16.856 seconds of aggregate time. Corn’s car control from Solo shined, as the champion hit only one cone in her seven timed runs.

The car that Corn drove to a title also carried another driver to a Prepared All Wheel Drive National Championship. Like all National Champions over the weekend, Warren Elliott, of East Haddam, Conn., took the GoPro HERO2 camera awarded to the title winners with a win in the class. Elliott, an autocross veteran, shared his car with Corn and drove to his own 24.371-second victory in the Hale Motorsports-sponsored Mitsubishi Evolution.

Sam Henry, of Republic, Mo., spent a month sneaking up on his National Championship in Prepared – Rear Wheel Drive. Henry finished just out of the trophies at the Solo National Championship, then gathered a silver medal at the end of September in F Production at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® for Club Racing. On Sunday, Henry dusted the field in his Springfield Dyno/SafeRacer/Goodyear Mazda Miata to grab a 47.610-second win over Rupert Berrington’s Solid Steel Sales Porsche 924.

In typical fashion, the closest finishes of the weekend were in the Stock Category. James Wilson, of Houston, Texas, used Sunday’s long courses to take a 5.607-second win for Front Wheel Drive cars in the TexasRallySport.com/Dustless Air MAZDA2over Tim Hardy’s Ford Escort GT. Ryan Miles, of Topeka, Kan., and a member of the SCCA Club Racing staff, used his autocross experience to earn a title in his first visit to the RallyCross National Championships. Miles’ RSR Power/Slow Pokes Racing Mazda Miata won in the Rear Wheel Drive class by just 3.820-seconds over Douglas Largent’s BMW 325i. Jan Gerber, of Ralston, Neb., used a flying final run in the Thanks Steve! Subaru WRX to put the All Wheel Drive title out of reach by 3.865 seconds.

Ken Cashion, of Castro Valley, Calif., is one of the most experienced RallyCross contestants, but needed every second of that advantage this weekend. The multi-time National Champion grabbed another in Prepared-Front Wheel Drive, this time by 4.726 seconds in the Honda HPD Honda Civic Si.

Some of the quicker machines make their homes in the Modified Category. Bobby Jasan, of Bentonville, Ark., topped the Front Wheel Drive competitors by 12.935 seconds in the LudicrousSpeedMotorsports.com Nissan Sentra SE-R. Likewise, Will MacDonald drove a Mazda RX-7 to a 17.149-second win in the Rear Wheel Drive class to claim his National title.

The event was once again hosted by the NEOkla Region, with the SCCA National Staff bringing the same equipment - including live timing, scoreboards, public address announcers with live audio streaming and more – used to put on the Tire Rack Solo National Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

The RallyCross finale caps the SCCA National Championship season. Champions were crowned at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships in Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 4-7, and in road racing at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs, Sept. 18-23 before this past weekend’s event.

More information, including results, on the RallyCross National Championship is available at http://www.scca.com/events/index.cfm?eid=3425.
